I have a Dlink that we bought from Futureshop. I'm not sure if it's the modem or WHAT it is, but i have to reset the thing all the time! I start up my laptop, and about half the time I get 'connected with limited connectivity' (which means you can't go online), or my network doesn't show up in the list at all. In both cases, I have to go to my basement and unplug the damned thing for a few seconds, then plug it back in. Sometimes i have to do that a few times and/or restart the laptop before it will go.

Sorry to have hijacked your thread!

Go in for Asus WL-520gU. Best router for $40 odd. Tomato compatible and very stable.

    op:
G is cheaper and the most compatible, but the range and speed is slightly slower
N is newer, costs a little more, but is faster and can have a greater range. However it is not a standard and there is the slight chance you could have issues matching up two different manufacturers (between the wireless card in your laptop and the wireless router).

I use a G router (Linksys WRT-54GL) and it works perfectly fine. Again I ask the same question that I asked in the other thread - what are you planning on using this for? If it's just for regular internet browsing then a G is all you need. If you plan on streaming video (etc) then you may want to consider an N router.

Of course having an N router won't mean much unless your laptop also has an N wireless network card built in.

I'm quite positive the op has no idea what Tomato is (or dd-wrt for that matter).

Well there you go. If you have a G card then there's no point in spending more money on an N router. Just get something like a Linksys WRT-54G router and you'll be set.

N routers are only slightly more than g routers. Dlink 615 is $49 for example. N routers definitely have better range than g and are backwards compatible. I suggest going with N as the norm in very near future is all wireless devices will be n rated. Also g routers can conflict or become interfered with by cordless phones, microwaves, etc.

Right to some extent, but the model you mentioned uses same 2.4Ghz band, the G range routers use. So interference issue still remains.
Also afaik N range routers are not completely supported by custom firmwares like Tomato, ddd-wrt, etc.
And even if OP might not be comfortable with getting them loaded on router, it is still advised because they are quite stable as compared to default ones.

For you, G is fine. And don't pay more than $40, there are good options for $40 or less.
