I've recently been to an Aveeda hair school for a service as a hair model (so its free of charge), but I'm not sure if I was supposed to tip them? They are students and they said it was a service free of charge, but they do walk you out of the salon at the end, I only thought about it later that maybe you have to give them something, even if they are still students? Does anybody know?

When I apprenticed I never recieved a portion of the stylists or owner's tips. The ladies who seemed to have savvy about tipping seemed pretty much on par with each other with how they tipped. 10%-15% to the stylist and 5% to the shampooer (my job as the apprentice).

I always tip my hairdresser, and I would even if she were the owner, because (as the others say) the tip is for the service. If I like the hair cut, I give a little more. Since I always go to the same hairdresser, I'm always happy with my cut!

Kinda off topic but is anyone else here a bit tired of tipping??? It seems like everyone and their dog is expecting a tip! I do tip but I am kinda getting sick and tired of it being expected. Like when you go to a resturaunt and they asume you will be tipping them so they don't feel they have to work for it.

Maybe I'm just crabby but I have had low paying jobs that required alot of hard work and I went out of my way but never got tipped. My DH and I work extremely hard for our money and when we chhose to treat ourselves to a dinner out I have a hard time tipping when the service is cr@p. Why should they get my hard earned cash when they don't do anything for it???

Maybe it's just me but I hope not??

Harbie - I know what you mean! I just don't tip well if the service sucks. And if the service AND the product suck... 0.00$ tip. I don't feel bad either. These people know that they work in the service industry, if they don't want to put in the effort that is expected, I don't give them anything. I worked at a fast food restaurant for over 5 years, and I still delivered quality service even though I didn't receive tips. Why should a sit down restaurant be any different? Same amount of work... That's just me though.

I feel the same way. A lot of time restaurant just expect it. They are making their own money, its not my job to provide more. And if I did tip everytime, it would make eating out a whole lot more expensive.

If the service is bad I don't tip at all. Such as the hairdresser who shaved the side of my head instead of trimming it. I got two free haircuts but I was getting married in two weeks. Luckily I know how to worl well with short hair. For free services I usually leave a tip because I am saving so much money unless it is a trade such as being a model.

I hate tipping and only do it if the service is excellent, and I mean excellent, and the girl does not roll her eyes and call my kids names under her breath . In Ontario, the minimum wage is $10.25 an hour and people that serve alcohol get $8.90, so I can understand tipping a bartender, because they make less because they make tips. Now, everyone else I have a problem tipping. I am already paying a set fee for the service, and they are earning a set wage for their service. Why should I be obligated to pay more? Business owners should be setting their prices at what they are worth and paying their employees fairly.
They do not tip in Europe, tipping is a North American thing....and it should be done away with.

Oh boy. I'm sure my opinion will be unpopular, but here goes!

Tipping: you'll never understand a person till you walk a mile in his/her shoes! In a restaurant, that actually translates to many miles over an 8 hour shift.

I worked my way through university waiting tables. I always tip restaurant wait staff because I know what the job is like. Most servers bust their chops for the patrons--they endure long hours on their feet with minimal breaks. I consistently worked 8 hour shifts with one 30-minute break and two 15 minute breaks...although sometimes, it was just too busy for those 15 minute breaks and I didn't get them. That's a lot of time running on your feet!

I served people who treated me with derision because they thought they were "better" than me. I had to clean up disgusting messes left behind at tables because people felt it acceptable to be complete slobs because someone else was cleaning up after them. I had strips torn off me by complete strangers because the cook didn't quite do their poached eggs the way King Charles himself would have his poached eggs done. I have been screamed at and treated like a subhuman species by complete strangers over eggs. Eggs! Ugh. Waiting tables. I do NOT miss those days. My feet are exhausted just thinking about it and my patience even more so!

As for hairdressers, I tip them too. You betcha! Why? Because even though I've never shampooed or cut someone else's hair for a living, I am sure that whatever hairdressers make for wages, it cannot possibly be enough for having to come in THAT close and personal contact with strangers. Just the idea that at the end of the day you are going home with the hair of strangers all over your clothes or that you have to spend the next 8 hours running your hands through hair that may be infested with lice or all greasy and dandruffy or be in close proximity for 45 minutes or an hour to someone who has horrible BO or halitosis and sit there and pretend like it's really enjoyable getting to serve them? Ugh. Gross.

As a server, tips were the only thing that made waiting tables worthwhile for the crap I had to put up with. It certainly isn't like I got a cadillac benefit plan, company car, or profit sharing perks for the hours I put in and that crap I tolerated. Nope. All I got were varicose veins in my legs, wrists that have never been right from carrying the heavy trays and lower back pain.

    Tip? Yes, I do!!!

I've never got a "professional" hair cut once in my life but I think wether they are the owner, manager, etc or not you should tip them. You have no idea how much they make, there might not be that much profit after all thier expenses. And a good business owner knows you don't take home your profits you keep them in the business & pay yourself a wage like everyone else so they might not be making much more than some staff.
Anyone else watch Tabatha's Salon Takeover? what happened to that show? It's hilarious but I haven't seen it for awhile
