Here's a neat Wall Street Journal article: more coupons are being used these days, but the growth is caused by one sort of coupon user:
"[H]eavy coupon users, people who redeem 104 or more coupons over six months [...] tend to be females under the age of 54 with college degrees and household incomes above $70,000, [polling organization] Nielsen says."
"[S]hoppers with an eye for discounts [are] 'executing with surgical precision.'"
oh, how flattering!

Statistics were likely based on last year's reported income, so maybe the extreme couponers are really well-educated women that have been laid off or stayed home to have a baby or care for children. Personally for me right now, couponing is an outlet for being underemployed, overeducated and broke.
What about you?

I have always been a frugal shopper and loved to save money. I am a university student and live off student loans which barely gives me enough money to pay my rent and nothing more.

According to the article, they are talking about people like me.
That being said, I think it's a very biased article, taking examples of people who take it to the extreme. While I might represent the "average" couponer according to A.C. Nielsen, the article does not go on to portray that "average" couponer. Do I have 150 bottles of Powerade in my pantry? Of course not. But that doesn't sell papers, does it?
Yet another example of poor journalism, IMO.

Interesting, though we are about at 1/2 that income level.
One point about the income level, though - when we were making less as a household - say from $20-23k - we used way FEWER coupons, because they are in general not for necessities like real food - veggies, fruit, milk, cheap bread, pantry basics.... there are many for prepackaged meals and extras which when you are 'poor' you don't buy anyway.
