There is a much smaller star, Sirius B, traveling with it in their orbit around the galaxy. Sirius B is very hard to resolve in a telescope because of the brightness of Sirius A.

Speaking of brighness, Sirius is also the brightest star in the night sky, shining at a magnitude of -1. There are brighter planets in the night sky these days, but Sirius is the brightest star.

Now that I have bought up the subject of planets, in the western sky at sunset, the bright "star" you would see is Jupiter. Closer to the western horizon and low in the sky you might see Mercury and Venus. Mercury is the higher of the two, but Venus is the brighter of the two. They are low in the sky and hard to see through the twilight glare. Also, it is best not to have any trees or buildings in your line of sight. These two planets will only be up shortly after sunset.

At sunset in the southern sky, you will see Orange coloured Mars and to the left of Mars is Yellow Saturn.

See if you can spot all 5 planets these days! (6 if your count Earth)
My daughter's bff downloaded an app to her tablet that shows the constellations and planets. I've been meaning to download it too and I keep forgetting. This would have been a great week for it since the moon is only at about 1/4 and is setting around 11:00 ish... makes for a great week of stargazing!! The 11th and 12th are supposed to be amazing nights to see falling stars. Looks like the stars are celebrating our birthdays @kenrod !!
