Or what I grew up knowing it as: a clicked hip. For me, I was born with my hip joint out of place. I guess at that time (in the 80's), they did not check the hips, or it was missed. My parents had no idea until I was about 4 or 5, and I kept falling down all the time. At first they thought I was being clumsy, but then they realized that it was something else. They ended up taking me to a trusted chiropractor, who put my joint back into place. Fortunately, I have been fine since then, although I do experience pain sometimes in my hips and I worry that I may get arthritis early.

Anyways, I was reading a bit about it tonight and realized it is more common then I thought, so was wondering if anyone else here has it or knows someone who has it. One of Larry the Cable Guy's children has it, and he is a sponsor for the National Organization for Hip Dsyplasia (the wonders of the internet, until tonight I didn't even know there was an organization for it)

I also have hip dyspasia. I haven't actually been diagnosed with it, but after many years of pain and seeing different doctors, I've figured it out. It's common for people to not even realise until they're into adulthood; I had my first symptoms in my teens.

I'm very athletic and always have been - playing softball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, etc. you name it! Well, since around the age of 15, a couple times a year my hip will start dislocating. That causes me to slow down my exercise and then it usually clears up within a month.

I've been in so much pain that I was on the ground, immobilized!! Nobody else understands what it is, because it is a feeling that is hard to describe - as I'm sure you know. But it's sharp, instant bursts of pain if you move your body the wrong way; even a centimeter. It used to cause me to be unable to straighten or bend my leg when I was having my worst problems with it.

Last year, I came to the conclusion that this is what it is, and I've tried to find out all the information possible. I stopped jogging completely, but still continue to play competitive volleyball. I know that I will need a hip replacement at some point, but I don't care. I won't stop something I love so much. Besides, maybe in 10-20 years the technology will be better, and they'll be able to fix it with lasers.

I've tried physio and it did nothing to help; it only put me in screaming pain. The guy used to tell me to cough and he would yank my leg. It felt so incredibly good while he pulled it, but the second he let the leg move back into place I was crying with immense pain. Needless to say, it didn't really help at all.

95% of the time, the pain is in my left hip, but once in a while, I will have a little feeling of it in my right - never to the same extent. I also know my body a lot more now, and can feel when it is coming on, so I slow down my exercises.

Pilates helps. The stretches and overall strength that you gain really does help. I would suggest it to anyone with this problem.

Anyway, that's all the info I have for you! lol I've also heard that many women suffer from hip dysplasia (more than men), but don't know of one person.

I am looking for many fpc coupons and willing to trade gift cards - especially stouffers and fresh produce. The expiry dates must be at least 1 month away. I'm also looking for betty crocker, pillsbury, philadelphia, nexxus, $3 beef, icecream, beans. I prefer large trades but have few coupons to trade.

DD2 was diagonsed within 6 hours of her birth in 2001. She was immobilised in a plastic and velcro frame for the first 4 months of her life. We went to the specialist every week during that period.

After that , it was once a month until she was 2 and then every 3 months until she was 4 .

Several times, we talked to new parents about the frame and the results. She's nearly 10 now and has no problems.

My sister was given a probable diagnosis 2 years ago when she needed a replacement hip joint.

Guess it has a chance to be genetic.

However my first boyfriend spent 6 months in plaster casts from his waist to his feet in the early 1970's to correct dysplasia. Glad it's easier on small children now.

That's great that they were able to find a solution and that it worked so well!

I work in orthopedics and we see this quite often, unfortunately since it is in the acetabular section that the problem is, we can only do total hip arthroplasty. The surgeon will restore the leg lenght, and replace the acetabulum. Usually they won't go through this until you are 50, since the arthroplasty doesn't last 20 years and you'll need a revision. It all depends on the orthopedic surgeon and ultimately it is your decision.
