I started using coupons when I was 22 and have been using them ever since. Back when its Fresh or Its Free was still around. And got into point hoarding around that time as well

Thanks for the awesome post and all the awesome responses!

It's no secret that I walk the fine line between having to visit the food bank, and not having to. So I really found this interesting. I think another thing to consider is access to the internet, which is HUGE in terms of coupons, flyers, deals ect. I love what some people have said about how when you only have $30 in your bank account it really doesn't matter that royal 8 double rolls is on sale for $1.99 for 3 days only....you can't afford to 'stock up' or buy the item at all unless you *REALLY* need it.

I struggle week to week, but am lucky enough to have the internet and also have a sister who has a new 6month old so I use coupons, religiously. I am likely the exception to the rule. I also take every chance I can to pick up a FPC or great deal and stash it till whenever I end up at the food bank again to donate at least.

    Em

Yes access to the internet is huge in finding coupons ...& also to know what sales/deals are out there ..not all flyers come to your doorstep ..plus there are lot of unadvertised deals you won't know about unless you see them posted in forums like SC

I must be a rarity, but if I'm greeted with an attitude over a few coupons (cause let's face it, I'm still brand new to this and don't even have much of a stash yet), I am more than happy to let her ring all the rest of the items in, leave that one coupon with her, and walk out without my groceries.... with a family of five who only shops every 3-4 weeks (for the big trip) that's a heck of a lot of restock. And I am more than happy to say "you know, my being here along with all of my other fellow shoppers, is what is paying your pay check, is it too much to offer just a little decency and respect? I know you would get that 10 fold where I work."

And out the door I go.

I have no qualms either about calling the manager once I get home.... I understand that cashiers are people to, but the eye rolling, sighing, and unnecessary remarks are just more than I can handle when I only have short amount of time to shop without the kids (or goodness forbid, if I have no choice but to bring them.)

I suppose I just figure that I am in the customer service industry, and if they can't bother to put forth even an effort.... why should I tolerate being treated like I'm less of a person?
"I can't brain today, I have the dumb"
