creative, I had heard that too - that girls could be done by 18 months, boys around 2. But my sisters had their girls done by two, and as I said ours was just over 2.
Yes, every child can go by his/her own pace, but I think sometimes parents leave it too long, then it's a bigger struggle. (nothing against anyone said in above posts!)
It's hard work to do, but with consistency, it really pays off and everyone is happier!

I have no clue why, we have tried everything (well, to my knowledge)... I'm not sure why he won't go even though he is in underwear while at home and out in public and has never had an accident since beginning of Sept. I have asked her if I can send him to her place in underwear because then he'll know he isn't supposed to pee in his pants, but she said no... I'm at a loss as to what to do in this situation (any suggestions are welcome!)
We pulled our son from daycare because she kept putting him back in diapers. A week later he was totally trained. I think it was just easier for her. He was 3 yrs 5 mont

oh i soooo needed to see this thread! dd's almost 4 and been introduced to the potty training scene since 2.5yrs old but doesn't seem consistently interested. We've had many good days when she'd run to us and tell us she's gotta go but then other times she'll not say anything. And (except for a few times) she is always hiding out when doing a #2 but will at least come and tell me she's done it so we can quickly change. I'm trusting in the same wisdom shared here...she'll do it when she's ready and I can't wait for that day! For now it's frustrating but it'll come. nice to share the story with others...hugs all around.

My DS is 3.5 years old and FINALLY last week he got it!!!!!!!!! I am soooooooo excited!!!! He's had a couple accidents, and just with pooping, and today I think he got that too!!!!!! I was so worried that he wouldn't be trained by the time he was starting JK I had been trying and trying and finally I just let it go, stopped pushing, just told him to let me know if he had to go potty. Hardest part was convincing my mother to stop bugging him! But she finally let it go and in a week he started on his own. Just one more in diapers...but I can't expect a 10 month old to be potty trained yet haha

DS was doing great- until a month or so ago- Daytime was a snap. ( He will be 2 1/2 this month.) But lately he is starting to resist. So I have backed off. My issue is that if he has another growing spurt- I won't have training pants for him. He wears a size 5 pant- Husky- and I have to shorten a bit. Usually I make his pants because husky sizes don't exist in Canada. He is huge for his age. The doctor tells me that he is just fine- and that he will be both tall and stocky. (My dad played university football, and DS is built just like him ) I have had to switch to the 4t-5T Parent choice or Teddy training pant for him only because those are made bigger. If he grows....

My DS is five, he's always been a bigger guy too. If you're stuck, go for Goodnites. We switched to those long ago because of DS's size and because he was always a very heavy wetter, he'd soak through a diaper at night. These hold a lot more than a normal diaper.

Thats awesome. A month before DS turned 3 i told him that he was done with diapers. 2 days later we were! (except at night) For some odd reason he refuses to go number 2 during the day now. He used to be a 3 times a day kid, now every ni ght in his sleep he poops! And he doesn't even wake up! Argh!

Zonny beat me to it - I was going to mention Goodnites too. They go up to 110lbs. My soon-to be-4 yr old is in size 6. Pullups just don't cut it anymore for nighttime. The Goodnites are a bit big on him, but I'd rather extra absorbency than not enough. He does get up at night when he's wet and come looking for us for a change.

Well, there's no way we're pulling him from daycare, we need it as hubby and I are both working, and we can't just take him out and look for another one since he's been doing sooooo much better with his speech since going to this new place!

I figure just like the daytime training, it will come.

    Good luck!
    It will come!

I don't know if that is true, or if people just tell you that to make you feel better!!! But most girls I know were trained in their 2's

im not suggesting you do this because maybe you might not get away with it....but...we were on vacay when my 2 year old decided he wanted to start using the potty. the first day i dropped him off at the sitter i hugged and kissed him and as i was shuting the door i said to her "oh by the way, hes in underwear, BYE!!" as i shut the door her jaw was dropped. fortunatly for us it worked out.

both my boys potty trained at 2.5 (day and night although i think night is largly developmental and hereditary in alot of cases). i just made being a big boy seem super appealing (ALWAYS connected being a big boy with wearing underwear)- you get to do sooo much more stuff when your a big boy! and i said being a baby is okay too (wearing diapers means your a baby -dont shoot me it worked) but it just means you cant do some cool stuff other kids can. both my both chose to be big boys, i didnt push or critisize them at all.

My girls decided to ditch diaper/pull-ups once they had a younger sibling who was a baby cos only babies wear diapers.

DS finally elected to be diaper free once he realised at daycare that most children his age were diaper free.

At the end of the day, it's one of those child-led situations which can be a complete PITA or , if you are lucky, easy. It's a battle (general) you needs to think about how to fight and on what grounds.

    Short answer : no

    long answer : NOOOOOOOOOOO!

    Very true

DS was diagnosed with Autism when he was 1.5 yrs old. I put him on the toilet when he showed signs of readiness (at 2) and let him play with a special car just for potty time and he did his thing. We would put him on the toilet once every 1-2 hours even if he didn't have to do anything. I used to also play a potty time DVD and read him toilet training books too. It really helped that he was in daycare from an early age as some of the other kids were being potty trained and daycare also helped in the process while I did my part at home.

DS is 4 and wears Goodnites at night, underwear during the day now. He is doing fantastic and I never get mad when he has had accidents. That is the key....
