I thought cribs with drop down sides were illegal? But when I look up the regulations it appears they aren't illegal, just have certain requirements.

I was in a store today and they had a crib with this fancy moveable side and the lady assured me they would be selling it if it was illegal. I kinda want this crib. I really wanted one with a moveable side, but I'm not willing to buy it if they aren't allowed anymore!

The big crib drop side recall was due to faulty parents!! It was from people not putting the crib together properly and the child rolling out due to this.

If you buy this crib and put it together according to the directions then I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

I have a drop-side crib (purchased in 2009), and I don't think I've used the drop side more than ten times. No wear to the hardware there!

I've always had a drop down side crib. But after 10years and 3 children (and at least 1 other from the person I got it from), it broke. My 3rd kid broke it one day, so we took her out of it and put her in a bed, not planning on any more. But alas, we were destined for 4 kiddos, so now we need to buy a crib again! I can't say we used it often, mostly when changing the sheets. It was handy and I'd love to find another one with the feature as long as it is still allowed! All the ones on sears.ca say "fixed side."

See, throwing that old crib out when it broke is what you're supposed to do. It's parents who continue using a broken crib or try "patching it up" that have put their children in danger.

It isn't that they're not "allowed". It's certainly okay to use a drop-side crib in your home. The US banned the resale or use of the cribs in hotels and daycares. Last I heard, Canada was looking at whether they should institute a ban. I think with recalls and the possibility of new regulations, though, most retailers have decided to sell the fixed side only.

If you plan to resell your crib after you're finished with it, you may want to buy a fixed-side in case the rules change in the next few years. If you're more interested in the convenience of a drop-side and are not spending enough on the crib to worry about its resale value, get a drop-side.
