Great post

I have to admit I am guilty of falling backward a bit since I started couponing, ie buying certain items again that I did sometimes in the past due to having coupons/it was free, etc (item like granola bars and juice).
I have never been a big lover of any juice save for the occasional craving for orange juice, which, growing up, my father would squeeze for me from actual oranges. I finally managed to wean my DH (then BF) off of his horrible habit of 2-3 huge glasses juice per day about a year ago, but alas, in the last 2 months or so, we have juice again in the house due to promos
I'm not sure why most ppl are shocked about the sugar content in it though? It's written on the labels for all to see, 25g, 32 g, whatever the crazy amounts are per serving!
We don't eat bacon or sausage in our household really (maybe 1-2 a year), but ever since we dabbled in a high protein diet about a year ago, we do buy sliced turkey to eat as a snack to keep us full when the hunger for sugar or carbs hits
I know there are nitrites, but kind of pushed the thought away lately lol...
I tried Maple Leaf Natural Selections last December when I had some coupons, found the taste no different or better than any other, but find it sad and deceiving that they would label it such...

I totally bought into the packaging...I guess I was just excited about the prospects of a healthy deli meat....The other products...I was never convinced they were healthy, but if we buy KD, we get the "smart" I know its not good for you, but it feels just slightly better then the regular.

That was a very informative Marketplace episode -- I love that show.
I was definitely shocked about the Campbells soup salt content! I went through my cupboards after that and am shocked about the level of salt in most of the canned items! I also don't like that they list the mg per serving and then you have to pull out a calculator if you are planning on consuming the entire can :S
Does anyone know where I can find a list of the max. recommended mgs of salt, sugar etc. / day that we should consume?

Even ham that you buy in the grocery store to cook yourself is loaded with the preservative known as salt, that's what makes it a cured ham.
Otherwise it's a pork roast.
Although I don't buy deli meats (maybe once or twice a year), personally I love ham, and it's an awful thing to have in my fridge. If it's in there, I'm forever going by the fridge for a nibble of it. Hot, cold, in a sandwich, with scrambled eggs, in a ham/egg/cheese sandwich, it's all good!
We buy bacon maybe once a month if it's on sale. I remember as a kid we used to get a box of bacon from the butcher called 'scrappy bacon' and it wasn't in neat slices, it was in bits and pieces. I liked that stuff, but don't find it in grocery stores now.$815 in Amazon GCs and counting!

Hmmm...I am confused, can someone explain this whole "nitrite" thing to me? From what I have read, it occurs naturally in many kinds of fruits and veggies, and in higher quantities then most packaged meats...is it just the chemical kind that makes some people sick? I heard also that it's very difficult to find any type of meat that is truly nitrite-free, and meat that is nitrite-free has a high risk of botulism? So...I don't know what to believe...
