I had heard of that place from a colleague and brought my kids when they were younger. Was actually neat thing to bring them in an ethnic grocery store. Gees they were everywhere, and screaming out loud: look at this and what about that.
Thankfully no Asian people were staring at us.
We recently went back as we wanted to built some staple items in order to make sushis at home. Last restaurant trip was a bit expensive for 2 little kids grown into men!
So off we go 1st at IGA and Metro to check the prices
. 3.99 for 10 sheets of Nori, the same for just 100g of panko, etc.
And then off we go to Hawaii (oh nooo not the warm beautiful island), found a package of 100 sheet of nori for 12.99 wow! Bottle of 500ml of rice vinegar for 1.49. Frozen fish eggs (capelin caviar) for 3.49 (100g), similar size at IGA was around 9.99.
Found the most fresh green beans for almost nothing. A huge selection of tea. Got high quality rice for sushi, 15.99 for 10kg. There was even cheaper and more expensive. We choose the middle brand. Etc, etc. We made way over than 100 sushis, and haven't gone through 25% of what we bought. So more sushis to come and hopefully, will get better at making an even more tastier batch of rice

The lesson: don't be afraid to go in your local ethnic grocery. You'll find really good deals!
The address for Marche Hawaii is : 1999 boul Marcel Laurin in Ville St-LaurentLast edited by cbou; Fri, Feb 3rd, 2012 at 10:09 PM.

I agree! I will have to try this Hawaii market when we are in the area!
One of our local ethnic mini-marts is called Marche Bonjour and they make jiaozi (dumplings with filling but also with soup inside) and you can have them make it to order (pick up next day) or buy whatever they have available. We love the lamb & coriander. They also have every type of meat; beef shank, thinly sliced beef for shabu shabu, etc., and it's all priced at $2.99 lb, as well as the staple veggies Asians like (bok choy, choy sum, sprouts, etc)We starting going there for the dumplings because they give you 21 dumplings for between $7-$8 depending on filling, while just down the road at a dumpling restaurant, Qing Hua, they want $12.99 for 15-18 dumplings.
There is also a great Korean supermarket, Jangteu, in our area that offers every type of Asian food which I highly recommend.

Sounds like a cool place. I go to Kim Phat on the South Shore. Very similar prices.

lol, address of Marche Bonjour is 2070 Maisonneuve O, just around the corner from du Fort/Supermarche PA.
The Korean is 2109 Ste-Catherine O, also near the corner of du Fort. That area has now been nicknamed Chinatown 2, with all the restos and Japanese bistros cropping up
Food heaven!!

If you are in the neighbourhood, this is a one stop shop.
I go to Hawai all the time. Family loves the frozen pot stickers. I buy my condiments and fresh chinese vegetables. My mom loves getting free newspapers every Friday.
There is a Giant Tiger there that lets you do overage towards your purchase but not money back. Bring your coupon policy. Nathalie and Denis, the managers knows about it, and they take printables.
There is a PJC and they let me use the $4 WUB3 Puffs from brandsaver.
Good Dollarama store.
Pharmaprix across the street limits coupons to 4 on same items but lets you buy as much as you want on anything.
Maxi does price match, use as many coupons as you want, and take printables. Good selection on makeup and was able to get CoverGirl lip gloss, 4.44 and use the $4 coupon. Going to get more when I get more coupons.
Super C lets you use as many coupons as you want.Last edited by couponmummy; Sat, Feb 4th, 2012 at 08:57 AM.

I find it hilarious that your Marche Hawaii is an asian store, cause the place with the same name near me is a greek store.

oh ok now I know where Hawaii is!!! I go to Tigre Geant and JC where you mentioned couponmummy, and I know I saw a store that I marked as having a funny name. Will definitely pay more attention when I go to TG next time.

Oh, just want to mention, if you go to a major mall, check out places that sell bubble tea. Comes in lots of flavours. They are very expensive with what you get.
I make my own. I buy the tapioca pearls at Hawai. Get a big bag for around $2. Get frozen mango or strawberries at Costco. Get fat straws at Loblaws. Use 1 Nestea iced tea tetra pack. A few ice cubes. Put everything in blender except the pearls. Voila. Cheap bubble tea. I even make it in the dead of winter and then I have to put on a housecoat because I'm so cold, lol.
Hawai also has a fish section, fresh meat, I think fresh pastry, and lots of offal.Last edited by couponmummy; Sat, Feb 4th, 2012 at 01:20 PM.

I used to be a fanatic drinker of bubble tea (like 2-3 times a wk, the largest size lol), but then my DH made me look up the calorie content of the bubbles-approx 10 calories per bubble
I have had to wean myself off since then or drink it without bubbles (not the same!)

Has RDI's L'Epicerie visited either one of the Marche Hawaii stores? I think it would make for a great segment!
I might have to look through the show archives to see if the show did go in the past.Hot, hot, weather---mmm, frozen treats!
