Hi Tbites,
I haven't yet been able to successfully save dahlia tubers inside during the winter! They usually end up too damp and developing a mould on them. I am going to try again this year, though, especially with this cream one. I adore it.
You're right, the winters are too cold here for most bulbs and tubers to survive and bloom the next Spring - or at least, that has been my experience living here.
A few years ago, I discovered a great small business in Nova Scotia that sells a wide variety of gorgeous dahlia tubers. I haven't ordered from them yet, but would like to. I would rather support small business than large chain stores. Here is the link:
Sid's Dahlias
Each dahlia can be viewed in more detail by clicking on the thumbnail image. Beautiful flowers!Unique items and great deals to be found on the Halifax Cat Rescue Society auction page.

By the way the greens on the golden beets are like spinach. Yummy

Hope someone has an answer for this one!! I found a ton of Dahlia tubers on clearance at Independent yesterday , does anyone know if I can keep them in the basement in a cool spot and plant them next year? I always pick up a and plant in the spring but my frugal self would love a lot more next year>

Pretty sure it has to be between 35-50 to store them, otherwise mold will build up. Maybe you can put them in peat moss in a paper bag. I think you have to take them out once and a while and spray them with water or they will dry out too much. Also maybe a fungicide.

Fantastic, Patty!! That does it.. I'm officially giving up on dragon wing begonias. Next year I'm planting one big clump of ornamental grass in my urn and that's it. My dragon wings are always scraggly and spindly, never as nice and full as yours are. Heck, I think I'm just going to move in with you and then I don't have to worry about it anymore
I just harvested a colander full of green beans from my plants and two cucumbers from the plant that DS grew for me at school. The poor little bean plant that he grew for me only yielded one green bean so I think I'll leave that one on the plant, perhaps let it dry and then he'll have more seeds for next year. This way he can multiply the plant that he grew for me.

Also, I planted out some peas in place of the bean plants that I yanked up. I'm not holding my breath though, the seeds are a few years old so they may or may not germinate. Most likely they won't. It's been a cool enough summer for peas so if they do germinate I should have peas by the end of the season.

Thanks for he dahlia info Patty, I did a bit of reading and think I will just pass on buying a bunch of them, our basement is too warm, but may buy one or two and see if it is possible!
Beautiful yard Patty, i'm surprised you don't have a problem with squatters living back there! I tried the Dragon wing begonias this year and they are beautiful, only by luck and not due to my green thumb, think I just got lucky on my placement choice, would definitely do them again!
