Time of Use Electricity Rates

Hey, Ontario! Here's what you learned: peak rate for electricity will be 14 cents per kwh beginning November 1. #FridayAfternoonNews

The peak rate will jump 0.5 cents a kilowatt hour (kwh), to 14 cents a kwh – an increase of 3.7 per cent.

Off-peak rates will increase 0.2 cents a kwh to 7.7 cents a kwh. That’s a jump of 2.7 per cent. Off-peak rates are weekdays from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and all day on weekend and holidays.

Mid-peak rates will also rise 0.2 cents a kwh to 11.4 cents a kwh, an increase of 1.8 per cent. Mid-peak periods are weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Time of Use hours change back to the winter cycle on November 1 as well.

I expect that everyone will be stocking up on candles and setting timers for when it's OK for the household to do laundry/recharge devices.

10 more days until we mess up our routines in order to use the cheaper rates for laundry and washing, etc.

The difference is just pennies between the swap in the 7am-7pm time frame while I will continue to do everything (prettymuch just laundry-but I do alot of laundry) after 7pm and before 7am

Wow you guys have cheep rates. The 14 per KW is high. I am not sure what an average bill there would be but here on pei we pay 12.9 per kw all the time with a monthly fee of 26.92 for service.

Normally I pay 120-160 per month depending on the month. This is for lights/ laundry/ dishwasher/ electric hot water/ water pump and I got oil heat. Not to mention I have lights set to auto turn off, and my house is only 960 sq feet.

anna do you heat hour house with electric ? also how big is your house. and do you have an apartment or anything.

Mine is where its at as its only me and two kids. If I was heating my house with electric and not oil I would be at about 500 per month

Its electric we have 7 in the house its a bungalow between showers and tubs it adds up I guess

so glad Regina pulled the Smart Meters but I am still run my appliances at night or they run while I sleep. I think we pay less than 11 cent all the time.

-gee my hydro bill was 233.48 (for 2 months)including water /electricity-we live in a 2 storey and just the 2 of us -only use my dishwasher now and then(cheaper than last year at this time also-last year was 306.92

Wow between sc and my new neighbors I'm afraid. I have always had gas heat. My new place is electric. I have an infared heater and going to get an oil filled one. I have two kids in college who just help with groceries. I'm thankful for school more than ever! I a trying to us only the baseboards that look new. Most don't.

Our rates are cheaper here in BC...last bill was $103 for two months (July/Aug). We have an electric hot water tank so that is where most of the cost is during the summer. Coldest winter months - $140 for two months. I only run the dishwasher once a week after our big family dinners on Sundays. And the boys are commanded to take short showers lol Home is three levels 2100 sq ft.

If you do this calculation you will be SHOCKED. The rates we are being told apply only to the energy portion of our bills. They do NOT factor in all the other charges. So - go to the bottom of your bill. Look for the total $'s you have been charged. Now divide by the total kwh you have consumed. That will give you the true charge you have paid. As an example one of our bills showed we used about 60% of our electricity off peak, 20% shoulder and 20% on peak. Doing this calculation the actual cost per kwh was over 17 cents!

If you own a seasonal property the cost per kwh will be breathtaking, assuming you do not air condition it, etc., as the actual energy you use is low, but the fixed charges are substantial and represent a much greater proportion of your bill.

NOTE - this is for Ontario where there are different prices depending on the time of day.
