    Starwood hotels are nice but expensive. Free nights are a good way to try those fancy hotels.

    SPG points are very good. This beatifull hotel is only 3000 SPG points per night and tax/fees are all included, so you do not need to pay a cent for it: http://www.starwoodhotels.com/prefer...ropertyID=3088

    I've been getting 2x points on all my amex gold card purchases that I should be only getting 1x point, eg. Home Depot, pizza, clothes .... is there some kind of promotion going on?

    Amex Starwood does have great offers to help earn free nights. Also like Choice Rewards if you're willing to go a little lower scale.
