Best Buy and Future Shop (and likely elsewhere) have the Moto G with a $125 gift card this week. It's in both flyers.

Are you getting cash back for every one of these sold?

I'd rather have an unlocked phone than a gift card

    Huh?

If you want a Moto G to port over to another carrier, why not take a Koodo or Virgin deal, cancel, then unlock it for $5-$10, and use the gift card whenever? Rather than pay full price cash for one. Net cost for this Koodo deal is $60, including a month of use, Virgin is often less. How much is your Staples phone?

I had a Samsung Galaxy Ace on a similar deal before, and the Moto G is a different universe in comparison. Faster, better screen, voice rec works. Not too sure of the features of the xperria, but I would guess it is few years old. I don't know if the $125 gift card offer will end tonight, so you might have missed the boat. It will be back to $100 fairly soon, but it might be a while before it hits $125 again.

BB/FS/TMS are currently at $100 gift card on this phone but apparently Wal-mart is at $125 this week.
