wonder if the money they are burning is in fact real money... or just a publicity stunt

That was my first thought while reading the post.
How closely did anyone get to look at the money?
Perhaps the radio station wanted the burn option to win? Then they could burn fake money and still be up a lot of publicity.
Strange promo though. I'd never pick the burn option...

A radio station definitely wants the burn option to win. As sad as it is, way more people would be talking about that, than about a prize winner (and they want the publicity). Though I agree, where is the guarantee that the money is real?.

Hence the idiom Money burning in my pocket means spending money not actually burning it!
Waste of resources too many stupid, crazy ppl. That $$$ should have use the money to give to a worthy cause

Thats what i was thinking. They could have donated the money to soup kitchens or food banks or shelter or any other charity or maybe to some school's hot lunch program or anything like that.. It is so sad that they wasted so much money.

I'm not really too surprised people voted to burn it, given the chance of winning the money is next to none at least voting "Burn it!" is more exciting & fun then having it given to some random person you don't know. Burning paper money is perfectly legal, for the main reason that it costs the government very little money to make bills. Since the money is just currency, a representation of value, burning it doesn't really do anything but removes that value from the person holding the bills. It's like burning a cheque, you could of used it to pay bills or rent but in the end the real value stays put. It's not like they burned $5000 worth of groceries, or a bunch of nice tvs

I think a lot of people have the mentality that if *they* can't have money, (only one person can), then nobody should have it. But I agree, they shouldn't have burnt it. That's just pyromania at its finest (and most expensive)!
