DD's teacher sent this problem home for them to figure out.. she's not even in grade 5 yet! If we can't figure it out I'm not quite sure how the 9 year old is supposed to get it. DH is the math wiz in our house and even he is pulling his hair out. I always hated math. Anyone have any ideas?

A stick is cut into three pieces, each having a different length. Each piece (except the shortest) is twice as long as another piece.
What fraction of the whole stick is each piece?

Please tell me this is a late April Fool's joke? Oh Jays, my heart goes out to both of you, our home was the same, DH was the math whiz, and he was always at work when they were doing homework. I have joked about this in the past, I used to tell all 3 of the kids all I could do is tell them if their math homework was neat. Hope someone on here can solve that for you!

    here's my thinking
the 1st piece is the smallest -
the 2nd is twice as long --
the 3rd is twice as long as the second ----
    so the 1st is 1/7
    the 2nd is 2/7
    and the 3rd is 4/7
    hope it's right

dq14 and lecale, you are math geniuses. WTG
GoJays, don't let the teacher know it took a whole country to figure this out.
BTW, I think this problem is higher that your DD's grade level.
To solve it, like dq14 and lecale did, you have to start by saying, Let x represent the smallest integer/length of the side of the triangle (I think it's a typical triangle problem anyways).

GoJays, you made us all grow at least one more brain cell.
It's o.k. if you give us another one tomorrow.
