Thread: Need some cheering up
-
Mon, Apr 7th, 2014, 07:49 PM #1
Last week I had a traumatic accident. I have some serious bruising but worst is I broke a finger on my dominant hand - shattered a bone in my pinky in 2 different places. I’m on pain killers and have a splint/half cast with my entire hand wrapped in a bandage to anchor the pinky. I’ll find out in a few days if I will need surgery, the idea of which scares me. I woke up depressed on the weekend, and had a good cry which helped. I’m keeping busy, which helps keep my mind off things, but at the same time I’m stressed because I have so much to do - including taxes - and it’s taking me at least 3x as long to do things (like typing his post).
I could really use some cheering up, some laughs, prayers, positive energy... And if anyone has some - advice on how to cope with doing things one-handed. Have figured out how to shower (plastic bag over hand) and wash my hair. Washing dishes is a challenge. And ugh the skin on the back of my hand is starting to get itchy.
I am grateful because I know things could have been worse, and the doctor in emergency said the same thing. But I’m having trouble keeping my spirits up - which is something very out of character for me.
Thanks everyone,

Sorry to hear this.
Thanks for taking the time to post -- it must take long. But you did it!!!! That's an accomplishment!!
Do you have a friend, relative or neighbour that can lend a hand? They can take a day of the week to come over, in rotation.
Don't know your province. Is home care possible? Once or twice a week?
About taxes, can you phone Revenue Canada to ask for an extension about your tax return? The doctor's report/hospital report would be your proof if they really want it.
(hugs)

I am so sorry this happened to you. It sucks to lose our independence. My 10 yr old just came out of a cast and having to help him bath was such a shock to both of us after years of going solo. The one armed plastic bag was a pain. For your hair you can try the Treseme dry spray. DH used it when he had a broken arm and it works well. Some Targets have it on clearance so at least a deal could help brighten your day.
Friends don't let real friends pay full price.

Indeed you have done well in managing to make a whole new thread. I'm impressed by that feat
Speaking from experience you already seem to have mastered the shower which for me was difficult enough. You just want to watch that hand like a hawk.
Do what you can do, how ever long it takes you, try not to be too hard on yourself.
Prayer offered on your behalf.Always remember the What are you thankful for today? thread as there always is something to be thankful for.

Oh, so sorry you are dealing with this!
I had to deal with being left-handed (I'm a rightie) when I had surgery on my right hand - and it was hard, so I understand. Just don't take any chances with even 'kind of' trying to use the hurt one!
Please ask for help if and when you can! Realize that not many things are 'urgent'...
Wishing you quick healing, and I'll keep you in my prayers!

Thanks, everyone. Your posts are helping I do have trouble asking for and accepting help. And I can definitely benefit from slowing down. So much wisdom on the SC forum And it helps to hear from others that they’ve gone through something similar. I appreciate the well wishes, suggestions, and the funny pics
Anxious and scared to find out tomorrow if I will need surgery but trying to stay positive...
Hugs to you all.

Hope it all turns out OK for you Silk, and you're not hurting too much. If it makes life easier, even get some paper plates and cups so you don't have to wash! And I'm like you, it's hard to ask for help - but you know you've got to do it. Most people are more than happy to help out!
