Perhaps some sort of acid spill? (vinegar or some such thing? I would turn the stone right over and not worry about it.

Salt? Friction or impact of some kind? Chemical reaction? Spill that never left...
As suggested above, the turning over the brick part could be the most cost-effective-unless that is jointing sand, which contains plastics that activate when wet (thanks to Vanilla Ice's home reno show I know this sand is different) to harden into place! Look into that before removing the brick.
