Just watched last night episode. So sad. I too have been watching since the beginning, why, why couldn't he just go to another hospital or something.

I am going throw this out there but based on what I have seen and heard I do not think anyone knew what was coming on this episode. How else did this not leak.
I do not think any of the cast knew and possibly not even ABC. Here are my reasons:
Why was not one else in the episode?
When the police showed up why did Meredith not call someone to watch the kids? Callie? Amelia?
Why did she not call anyone well she was at the hospital waiting to come be with her? Amelia (Derek's Sister?) Karev (Her new Person?)
Why did ABC have to rearrange their schedule to accommodate this mystery 2 hour episode next week?
Nothing in this week's episode synopsis says anything about Derek being dead as to not leak it
Just a theory.2022 is going to be my year, the year I find organization in my life and the year I focus on myself,
follow along as tackle day to day life and whatever else 2021 throws at me:

Of course it was really odd that she didn't call Amelia to say goodbye to her brother. Plus the other oddities you mentioned.
How about calling in the load of docs from her hospital to come?
Patrick had signed a two year contract last year. He was missing from a LOT of episodes this season. Must have been a pretty big blow-up with Shonda to have him leave.
The two hour episode is probably needed to deal with all the aftermath and mourning.
Interesting interview with him - he's pretty cagey about some things

Well, wowsers!
I cried at SO many different times during all this - of course, personalizing it a lot of the time...
I think that, considering the circumstances, they handled everything very well - glad they didn't just focus on Meredith, but all the other relationships and how they were doing.

I know, but it made it all the more obvious how badly Shonda wanted to be rid of him....
Would have liked to see Cristina at the funeral, and have some interaction with Meredith.

I said I wasn't going to watch, but its still my favourite show. I was not really a fan of the first hour or the flashbacks but the second half got me. I will say my two favourite scene were when Alex walks into to Mer's hospital room, and Amelia finally breaking down. So powerful.

I feel ripped off. Like they fast forwarded his death so they wouldn't have to deal with it. Flash forward a year and have everything be fine. I don't think his character was treated the way he should have....

^ That's what Shonda is getting a lot of flak about - well, what the heck did she think would happen?

Not a bad season ender, but not really cliffhangers...
Glad Richard and Catherine finally got married!
Hoping Alex smartens up, grows up, and moves on with life with Jo.
Saddest is Jackson and April - sheesh, she's stupid!

Gee, I thought I posted last week!
This week's - such angst with the baby twins - I'm pretty sure that some similar story was in the news not that long ago. I felt so badly for Karev. What should have been a very touching moment with him holding the baby who died - was just so ruined by it being such a fake.
I'm sad Jackson moved out - but April just didn't ever see his point of why she was so very wrong by having taken off the way she did.
And Maggie - that girl needs therapy.
