My friend used to challenge her kids to find heart-shaped rocks when they were out-and-about and then every now and then they would paint them and use them for gifts.

It amazing how many things can be done for cheap or even free. Check out on line for events in your area. Stuff can be purchased all the time. But eventually they can get broken, lost etc but kids always remember doing things rather than stuff. I have fantastic memories of camping, fishing, climbing trees ect from my childhood but not one single toy sticks out in my mind.
