Somewhere in my emails I received a link to JoS.A.Bank, and that fact that they ship to Canada, so I wandered over there to find some exceptional sales!

One I was interested in for our SIL was a slim-fit spread collar dress shirt, reg 108.00 for 18.53
Great, I thought, I'll order it and hold it for him for Christmas.
    Not so fast....

    Cost of item: 18.53
Shipping: 35.69 (all in, incl taxes, nothing due at the door)
    Order total: 54.22!

Which, if you think about it, is still 1/2 price for the item, but jeepers!!!
It just doesn't seem fair! They have exceptional sales..when will they come to Canada?! Gr.

I find this kind of typical I have seen so many sites advertise that they ship to Canada but than when you go to check out the shipping is outrageous.

Ugh, Ebay users are the worst for jacked-up shipping costs. Sure the price of the item is a steal but I'm not paying $40 in shipping. I ain't dumb.

I bought my first item from ebay last week. I was shocked to see $50 shipping on $10 items. Are you insane?

Those items don't sell and just keep getting re-listed.

I've had something similar happen as well - guess that's why we stick to shopping Canadian - or wait for those few times there are shipping deals from US sites.

They must be using a third party shipping company like BorderFree. That ups the cost, definitely. If I know I'm heading across the border, I have the items sent to a parcel pickup company ten minutes from the border on the US side. One time, we saved about $1000 on window blinds for our large basement windows just by ordering online during a sale and having them shipped to the parcel pickup place (the company didn't ship to Canada). In the end, we got four wide Levelor blinds that had been cut to size for $500 instead of the $1500+ they would have cost us here... and it was a drive of an hour and a half each way to pick them up. No duty, as they were made in Mexico. Just paid taxes at the border. If you're ordering a bunch of stuff, or something where you're going to be saving a whole lot of money by doing so, it can be worth it to ship to a US address.

Plus there are hidden and surprise charges like brokerage fees, customs duty etc etc when the product arrives at your doorstep.

UPS and FedEx are the worst, when it comes to that ..Canada Post is usually much better

I hate ridiculous shipping rates, but even more I hate it when on top of those, you get charged a brokerage fee of over half the price of the item! I will go out of my way to avoid using UPS, as I have found they are the worst. Or keep the items below $20, so no brokerage, but then higher relative shipping costs.
