When I first moved down here, I knew the train tracks were close by, I knew I would hear trains. I didn't expect to hear the banging sound of trains coupling at 3am. Took a week to get used to the sound. Now, when I'm staying somewhere else, I can't sleep...cause it's too quiet.
I actually LOVE the sound of a train whistle blowing (awake or asleep) - I find it soothing in a weird way.
I think the most annoying sound I ever heard was from the sketchy friends of a certain neighbour who lived here many years ago. They were usually too far gone (alcohol, drugs, seared brain cells) to use the intercom and used to scream at the top of their lungs "Hey, P, let me in!" (only in far more colourful language at every hour of the day).

LOL.....and that sound to me, when I'm lucky enough to hear it, just soothes me to sleep!! The tracks are far enough away that it's a soft sound, but geez, some conductors just offer an unsatisfying toot, while the more generous ones let out loooong ones...how different we all are!!
I have to agree with hearing an animal or child crying....particularly in stores where a 'mother' is absolutely ignoring her little baby crying its head off!! GEEZ!! How long have you had it sitting there while you're walking the mall or browsing the grocery aisles?!! It's hungry, tired, pissed off and sleepy! DO something, dummy!!!
