A simple, effective, FREE way to clean the glass in front of your wood burning fireplace. Simply spit on a piece of newspaper and rub on the glass. Wait until the glass is cool - it shouldn't break even if hot but you do not want to burn yourself. Really works.

Why not do it with some water, or window cleaning detergent?...

I can't see water working. Seems to me it would just smear the soot all over the glass. Spit and newspaper are free and work really well as long as the soot isn't thick and really baked on. If that is the case you have to use a special product that is available at heating stores and Home Hardware (for example) that carry wood stoves, etc. for cleaning glass on wood stoves. I don't think window cleaning detergent would work in that case either.

water works but lots of elbow grease involved. white vinegar is a lot better. That shifts even the black tarry goo left from wood ....

There is a specific glass cleaner used for gas fireplaces which clears streaks, soot, etc.. costs approx. 6 dollars at any home improvement location. I service and clean fireplaces daily and always have some handy.

I have this stuff as well and it does work well too. I use it when I have really stubborn burn marks on my glass and on a gas fireplace when it has a white film building up on it.
Recently I was having trouble getting hard water streaks off of a glass show stall. They had been on there a long time. Checked the net and found a bunch of solutions, the main one being some variation of vinegar. Tried them but still could not get all of the streaks out. Tried this product and it worked like magic. Shower stall glass now looks like new.
