I am asking because I see so many people marked as hoarders with animals now a days. For me, dogs should be a 1:1 ratio to people in the house, cats can be a 2:1 (2 cats per person), and everything else all depends on space and age really.

How many pets is too many in your book? I have a friend who lives with her sister and her boyfriend and they have 7 cats. Now that sounds like a lot but their place never smells and you really wouldn't know they had a ton of cats if you just did a walk through. At the same time, a woman down the street from me has 7 cats and it kind of smells around her house. :/

I guess it's too many when the owner can't give each pet the attention the pet needs.

I think 2 cats per household is plenty. My daughter has 4, and while her home doesn't smell all the cat hair in the house is terrible, she is also starting to get big vet bills as they are getting older.

I would imagine so. I lived with 7 for a few years and it was a lot. The only way I would ever have that many at once again living with me is if I have the time and money to give them a good life.

Yeah that is true. I noticed that they get more jealous of each other than dogs! This just sets up for fights.

cats don't smell!! people are too lazy to clean the litter box once it's soiled!!

3 dogs for one person is too many

2 cats per person is good.

So I have 4 dogs and 2 cats. The cats basically just sleep, eat and only occasionally want attention. Clean the litter twice a day, make sure they have clean water and a full food bowl. Easy.
The dogs? Fresh water and lots of food. Again that part is easy. Lots of fresh air and time spent in the backyard playing ball, chasing them, brushing them or just having a drink while they sleep on the deck enjoying the sun. The 3 little dogs ( 2 long-hair, 1 short-hair ) are so much easier than my 1 large dog. He is a short hair BUT he sheds so bad that I am surprised he is not bald. I'm constantly sweeping, mopping, washing slipcovers and our clothing because of his hair, drool and tracking in dirt, mud etc. And then there is the poop duty. Our 3 little dogs could poop in 1 pile for a week and not have poops the size of our big dog's 1 poop. TMI but it is a fact of dogs. They poop.
4 dogs is our limit. Anymore and I would have to hire housekeeping.
I don't know if that answers the question but it does apply to our situation.

I think people can have as many as they can properly care for. It seems everyone has an opinion these days; people who don`t like pets would say one is too many, so I don`t pay much attention to what people think. Everyone may have the right to their opinion but that doesn`t make it the right opinion.

I have two dogs and three cats. I would not want to have any more dogs, especially as one of them is a complete handful and needs a lot of exercise and attention. As for cats, like wolfwoman said they sleep most the time and aren`t much trouble; I would have another one but my cats would completely hate me if I brought another cat in the house, so I`ll just be sticking with the three I have.
