Strangely, I haven't heard either in a really long time. I always seem to get called "love" by strangers now. Or the generic "Mom" by people at daycare.

The generic title "Mom" secretly annoys me but I understand why they do it.

I'll admit, one reference I do find patronizing is when people say "my friend" e.g. how are you doing my friend?. However, I just give a stern look and go about my business...I mean I don't know you from Adam, how can I be "your friend".

I was always called miss, and I Remember the first time someone said ma'am, it took me by surprise. I felt the same as other people I thought I was old!! I make it a point to call everyone miss even if they're older..it's really not a big deal, but if it makes someone feel young for awhile all is good!!

I'm 37, and I find "Miss" startling, especially when people can see I'm dragging two kids along with me. I'm horrified when store employees refer to women in their seventies as "this young lady".

My in-laws live in the States so we frequently visit them and I noticed that people in states tend to call me "ma'am". It must be a cultural thing. It used to bother me at first since I also feel "older" when being called such. But not anymore. Just glad that there are still people who respect women.

Yeah, well thanks to social media, the word "Friend" doesn't mean anything anymore.

Not when you add...."with benefits" to the end of it

Honey is a pet peeve of mine too!

I'm ok with Madame/Ma'am/Miss now. It was strange to get that in my late twenties/early thirties but they are fine now. It does leave me thinking if I should address a male youth cashier as young man?

Just not Hun/Honey! I'm not your sweetheart...

French speakers say Madame to grown women....which is about the same thing as Ma'am (Madam).

It's too casual-you can use it with friends but it does not reflect well on a business unless it's a skateboard lifestyle store.

Etiquette books support those titles for notes and other social occasions. But how many of us run households with paid household staff like the show Downton Abbey?

Customer fits the bill best. "Customer, I'd like to tell you about our store loyalty card program..." or "Customer Smith? Your order just arrived this afternoon."

Or British households that are living abroad where the formalities remain observed?
