Thread: Bird's English Custard Powder Downsized!
-

Birds Custard powder is an absolutely excellent product marketed from the U.K. by Premier Foods. I have been buying and enjoying it sold in cartons containing 340 grams for many years. I recently bought a new carton, wider but shorter than before, and found the contents had been reduced to just 300 grams, an almost 12% reduction. Of course, there was no price reduction.
Not only is the carton shorter in height, the lid also now has a significant recess disguising the loss of usable space inside. When are these companies going to realize that it is not a good practice to con their customers? This thread is currently associated with: N/A

Would you rather have the same size with a price increase?
All types of food products are going up in price, everything is more expensive - unfortunately, that's life!

100% agreed. We should probably just assume product shrinkage across the board. I do. That way it doesn't come as a surprise. Either the product gets smaller or the price goes up. No one is conning anyone, this is the way it goes. If a product has remained the same size for the past decade then surely the price is not the same as it was 10 years ago.

I, for one, hate product shrinkage. Raise the price? Fine, prices increase, we all know that. Keep the price the same but make the product smaller and hope we don't notice? That's deception.

My thoughts entirely, Dave P. The smaller the product packaging the more packages we have to buy - and dispose of. Bad for us; bad for the environment.

@OP....you are in NS, but round here in Ontario, the bigger size is still widely avail in places that I go in the GTA. A British store I popped into when I was in Hamilton area once, did have the 300g size, and I refused to even get it. I love custard since I was a wee lad, and have a number of the old school cans in the pantry

It's life unfortunately, but I'd rather they shrink the package than make me pay more.
I want it to be my option whether I purchase a replacement right away. If I don't want one right now, I'd rather have an empty spot on the shelf than having a large open jar or can sit in my cupboard and get stale.Apply every possible promo code to your cart, at every store that you visit (and get points for cash back on top of that?). It's sweet and easy with HONEY.

my mom made this with raspberry sauce so good. yes, I'd rather they were upfront and kept the size the same and increased the price. I'm sure we'll see more of this with the slump in the cdn dollar.

Oh and add Chipits chocolate chips(the ones in the yellow bag) You can still find some stores with 350g bags, but the newer bags are now 300g. This one ticks me off because a recipe I make takes 350g. Gotta get out the postal scale to weigh up the rest.
I went and checked my custard powder, its a 340g can still. I don't buy that often so I wouldn't have noticed
