Expired on: Mon, Feb 12th, 2018I have gone to the same grocery store and sometimes they charge 5 cents for a bag.
Sometimes, while you are paying, they load your item into a shopping bag. They give you one bag and fill as much as possible.
Have you had this experience recently? Started happening with me in December.

Sometimes the cashier sees that we have our own bags, but sees that we have bought meat. They automatically put the meat in a plastic grocery bag and don't charge.

It really depends on the cashier. There are some who are an absolute stickler for the rules, and others who don't mind. It could be because of all the shoppers who go through and then ask for an extra three or four bags after their purchase is done.
I went to a SDM where the cashier threw my milk in a bag and handed it to me after I paid for my purchase. After I checked my CC a few days later, I saw $0.05 was charged to my account.

Metro charges me for their flimsy bags that usually don't even make it home before they tear. Sobey's also charges but at least those bags are durable and built for punishment. SDM doesn't charge me anymore, neither does RCSS but the only time I need a bag from RCSS is when I run in for something quick and don't have my reusable bags with me.

I refuse to pay for bags ever. If a store starts loading my stuff into a plastic bag without asking me first, they better not charge me anything for it. When I'm shopping any store out of habit I usually have the reusables with me.

We mostly shop at Sobeys and Co-op, neither of which charge for bags.
SDM does, but their bags are big and hold a lot.

No, I usually carry a large enough purse to put the small things in. I think its the silliest thing in the world to charge for a plastic bag

On the blog today, they mentioned that Walmart will start to charge for bags starting in February. 5 cents per bag.
