There is consideration for making the train link affordable for local commuters?
The premier of Ontario said Monday that Metrolinx “has to look at” the possibility of pricing the Union-Pearson Express (UPX) train to serve local commuters. This comes after the provincial agency that built and runs the train reported Friday that ridership has actually dropped in the months since its September peak. That peak was, itself, so dispiritingly low that I wrote then that Metrolinx should open the service up to lowly commuters while it was waiting for the business travellers it so desires to return its affections.

It’s nice to see that, after another two months in which it averaged fewer passengers than the Burnhamthorpe bus, the idea is finally getting some high-profile play.

(Just think: somehow the Burnhamthorpe bus manages to attract all those passengers without even having its own website and custom-produced magazine and uniformed attendants. It has but one thing to recommend it: the cash fare is $3.25, and the bus driver will give you a transfer to get you on the subway for free, too.)

This should have been made obvious from the outset--it would get people using it and talking it up with friends and family. Think of all the airport hotel conventions that could be faster to reach on a weekend with the train!

Next week, the fares will be half as expensive on the train.
Metrolinx cut UPX ticket prices in half last week, after the government conceded that there were too many empty trains running between Union Station and the airport. Starting next Wednesday, an adult fare drops to $9 from $19 for Presto card users and to $12 from $27.50 for cash riders.
Metrolinx has conceded that prior to the train's launch in June its research showed that potential riders were more comfortable with tickets in the $10 to $15 range.
