So, I have 2 trees right outside my bedroom and sitting room windows. This area used to be orchards, so the trees are fruit trees and attract many types of birds and insects. I was in the sitting room today with the window open and was being serenaded by the most beautiful bird. I looked over and saw the shape of a cardinal. What captured my eye was its colour. I took some photos because it looked very yellow. I know it was a cardinal, but I'm curious if it was a female cardinal or a yellow northern one. Soon after I started snapping photos of this beauty, a red cardinal showed up to start singing too. My morning was a lovely one with the beauty of nature being but mere feet from me, separated only by a screen. So does anyone know if this is simply a female or a northern cardinal?

Tara that is a female cardinal the male is alot redder than she is. But boy she is beautiful. You know if you have a pair in your yard you may also have baby cardinals later in the year. They like cherries, seeds and bugs.

Thanks horndogg. I had not previously seen anything other than red cardinals around here. This is the "friend" that came shortly after to join in the serenade. I would love some babies come summer. lol

I love the cardinal. Their song is so beautiful. Sadly, I don't get to see too many in my neighborhood.

We have lots here because it's urban, but we're beside a naturalized area. The males are very territorial and have spectacular aerial battles. There is one that patrols the bus stop, and 100% of the time if I am there daylight hours, I will see him.

We have been putting suet on our deck and watching the show. We have a cardinal couple that comes every day.
The female has a silly habit of trying to land on our sliding screen door and also purposely banging into the patio door. She doesn't really hurt herself as she then feeds from the suet and then flies away.
At our old house we had a mirror on our shed wall and for 3 years in a row, a silly male "took on" it's main rival - it's own reflection, by try to scare it away by pecking away at the reflection - somehow that reflection never went away!
I love watching and listening to birds!

Thanks! Been wondering for so long what to call them, usually just referred to them as diving black & white ducks.
Noticed from the wiki entry that their status is 'vulnerable'. We seem to have quite a few pairs of them in our area lately.
I use a DSLR camera (oftentimes with a zoom lens) to take pics of birds.
With the long-tailed ducks, I used the standard lens and just cropped the pic to post here.

We have an osprey hanging out here, which DH called the "fishing eagle" for the longest time. 4 walnut trees on the property here and currently 0 squirrels, so I think he's not a seafood specialist. The squirrels had a habit of committing kamikaze suicide on the hydro lines, taking out the power a couple times a year, so I consider the osprey my hydro security worker.

i have pigeons that seem to be nesting on my roof I believe. They often sit on my balcony rails.
I bought one of those fake plastic owls that they guy at the hardware store promised me would scare the pigeons away. They laugh at the owl.
Not looking forward to cleaning the poop off my balcony come spring.

My camera phone sucks. So no. lol I have a pretty good quality camera with zoom, I keep it in my sitting room now because there have been a lot of different birds, and black squirrels and such lingering around. I have this black squirrel that keeps coming around, he's so beautiful. Would like to get some photos of him.

I miss seeing chickadees around here. I know that there are chickadees in Chatham but none around our part and I have often wondered why, Robins a plenty and sparrows. We have blue jays and even a Blue Heron that hangs out from time to time at the pond. We have red-winged blackbirds that squawk at us when we go for walks and mallards that raised their young here last year and Canada Geese around the pond. In the winter junkos feed from the suet that we leave out but we really don't see them in the summer. We see seagulls and sandpipers as we are not too far from the lake.
