I graduated university in 2006 and the only reason I knew what I wanted to do with my life was because I was already engaged to my now DH and knew I'd eventually be a mom (I never thought I would get married or have kids), so that affected my choices. I had wanted to be a professor (really bad idea in retrospect because the jobs are very few and not dependable), but changed to wanting to be a teacher because it was more family friendly.
Now I've been teaching for 5 years and really love what I do (I love kids and they always tell me I'm a good teacher compared to others), and even though it hasn't been easy, I can say I'm happy with what I've chosen because I really do enjoy my work. I think if you're talking life-long career, that needs to be a consideration, do something you really enjoy. Now if you don't know what you'd really enjoy, there's nothing wrong with experimenting and taking on different jobs until you find something that fits.
Some people have an idea of what they'd like and end up hating it after actually doing said job, and some people have no clue and end up doing something they love that they would have never imagined for themselves. My DH studied history in university and now works as a financial planner and loooooves it (aside from the insane hours), it's something he never would have thought he'd be doing but sometimes that's what happens.

I thought you were interested in writing. You should concentrate on doing some short stories or check out some newspapers in your area. Reporting could be a start to something bigger and better.
