Toronto Hydro customers should be following the story that the utility's board is considering stopping the City of Toronto's $60M dividend. The City Council took notice of the intention because the loss of that money is going to mean property taxes will have to make up the difference. There is concern the utility might be partially privatized soon.
Hydro’s argument that it needs to divert the dividend to urgent electricity grid work comes as Hydro chief executive Anthony Haines is poised to announce, sources close to Hydro say, hefty third-quarter profits thanks to rate hikes approved by the Ontario Energy Board last year to pay for, among other things, grid upgrades. The OEB granted Hydro $2.25 billion of its $2.5 billion request over five years for capital spending.
The Star revealed in January that advisers and senior staff to Mayor John Tory, as well as Hydro officials, were quietly preparing for a possible partial privatization of the electricity utility. One argument against selling part of Hydro is it would reduce dividends to the city that totalled $241.7 million over the past five years. Scrapping the cash payment could potentially remove that obstacle.
But some observers speculate the board is sending a message that if council blocks privatization that would inject new capital into the electricity distributor, all its budget-boosting dividends will be diverted to grid upgrades.

n June, 90 per cent of respondents said they were concerned about the cost of electricity. And 64 per cent said the government should prioritize affordable electricity over climate change initiatives.
A month later, 94 per cent of people said it is important that the government control electricity prices. The same percentage said their electricity bills had become much more or somewhat more expensive in the past five years.2021-Bring on the sunshine, sweets & online shopping.

Its a crisis for rural people and those in northern Ontario. Amazes me that they had to spend tax dollars on a study to find out that rates too high. People are doing everything to conserve, shutting off coffee pots, turning lights off at night, drying their clothes outside and yet are struggling to pay their bills.

Make sure Kathlynee Wynne is voted out of power. She and McGuinty before her has destroyed ON.
now she is going to lose elections, so she is coming up with all sorts of rebates and credits for Hydro, just to stay in power. Don't fall for that. She is just taking your tax payers money or more debt for the province to dangle these carrots for you.
They have signed horrible Hydro contracts and given Hydro and Government executives big bonuses, salaries and freedom to gouge Hydro customer's creating all this mess !

This whole Green energy stuff has failed miserably. Just company executives, politicians and Government big shots , middle men have made bonuses, huge salaries and kick backs and commissions on it.
Northern and Rural Ontario people have sufferred to worst ! They literally pay 3 times what City people pay. They can no longer afford bills. Some of them are actually going back to propane, oil heating and cooking and stuff like that. Some are even going back to wood cutting and heating.
So just opposite of Green energy is taking place.

I remember there was a BBQ lighter sale thread on SC. Lighters, candles (the tapers or 8 inch kind) and appropriate candle holders or say hurricane style ones might be the hot-ticket gift idea for relatives turning off power at home to save their $$ for other life necessities. I'm not a fan of votive candles for long use because one has to replace them often or keep tipping the melted wax away from wicks to keep flames going.
Hurricane style holders have glass chimneys to minimize drafts blowing out flames and help keep hands away from the wick-could be a good choice for sturdy tables. Just make sure whoever gets candles is able to practice fire safety and know to extinguish the flames before leaving a room. Otherwise LED rechargable lights or Lee Valley Tools camping lantern lamp might be better gift choices.2021-Bring on the sunshine, sweets & online shopping.

I switched all of my light bulbs to LED and will use solar lights for my Christmas decorating. I feel badly for people up north. The good news is for once our rates haven't increased with time of use. I guess politicians make too much money to be concerned about utility costs.

Municipalities and companies are having issues paying their bills. Expect property taxes to follow due to this. The Ontario Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Orillia budgeted 1.5 m for electricity this year but it has ballooned to 1.9 m. Ontario is now a have-not province. Industries are going to Quebec and Manitoba instead of here because of hydro costs.Last edited by seylz_gurl; Mon, Nov 21st, 2016 at 04:41 PM.

Interesting article about wind power, US already had the message back in 2012, Ontario's energy problems totally relate to this. Wind power is all about credits and the hidden costs of wind electricity is that wind costs triple what it does from natural gas. Now this year we are seeing that it is not so hidden anymore. Worst timing possible to bring in cap and trade which is said to recover emission costs? Maybe it is a way to pay for the exorbitant cost of wind. Natural gas is the cleanest burning conventional fuel and very affordable.

It's just ridiculous with everything going on with hydro costs, thankfully, I'm in a student home with everything included I would not want to see how high the bill is for a house of 7 students! I really don't know how even my parents can afford hydro with how much it is costing now and they make a very decent income!
I might not have to deal with this yet, but I want her gone too!! The only good thing she's done is the change of OSAP for "free tuition" starting next year, but who knows how much that'll cost taxpayers and the level of debt!
