The leaves look geranium-y to me. Crush one between your fingers and give a sniff - they have a very distinctive aroma, not altogether unpleasant, IMO.
I have a very similar looking plant in my garden, though I'm pretty sure mine is a weed. Use google images to search for mallow weed. You'll definitely recognize it when you see the flowers. On the bright side, it's edible, but a pain to pull out when it's any larger than what you see at the moment.
It could be a Geranium or a weed called Creeping Charlie
I would personally dig it up and pot it. If it's creeping Charlie it's basically impossible to stop. I have t in my backyard and it's taken over a HUGE HUGE section of my yard. Luckily everywhere else is super sunny so it avoids the rest of my yard. Best to get it out quickly as soon as you see it. That's a big project for me this year is ripping t all out. Possibly transplanting some of my Lilly of the valley in hopes it takes over instead :(

samm is right once creeping charlie gets a foot hold in your lawn it's all most impossible to get rid of
I disagree on the creeping Charlie call-stems look too firm and straight (we've had this grow in crevices and boy can those stems weave and bend in tight spaces). Believe OP has a flower plant on the way.
I think it's a geranium.
i'm far of being an expert *.....but there some facts that can help you find out...
what kind of gerenium did you plant on this spot, was it perennial in your area ?
if the answer is ''no'', is it a well protected spot from freezing ? In that case it could be a geranium
if the answer is ''yes''....no doubt, it is a geranium...
hoping you find out soon because this ''charlie thing'' seems to be a real pain for gardeners and you don't want it in your garden
* my avatar is a picture DH took last year in my garden and i have no idea where it comes from.....i never plant an iris root where it is....
Thanks for all your responses!! Im gonna pull it and put it in a pot and see what happens... Will post an update in a couple of weeks!!!
Thanks!!!

I was going through my recipe pages from Food & Drink and came across the pic of Wild Ginger (in the foraging article from Fall 2015)-about same size and colour of leaves but it has a distinctive quilted design on the leaves not shown in your pic.

Think you can see a flower in your future!
Well i took a few new pics since I've had a few new plants pop up Attachment 312067Attachment 312068 and with a bit more research I think I've determined this mystery plant to be Mallow...
A weed... Boooo.

Thanks for the update! I knew it looked way too much like the weeds in my yard. The first year we moved into the house, I left them all, thinking we had geranium all over the place. Now I take them out with the dandelions!
What, no mallow tea making? Those tisanes cost $ at the store. Guess it's not the right mallow to make marshmallows with.
Some SCers had winter issues with coughing/mucus/etc. This plant might be gold for the next round.
