Thread: Japanese Maple tree

    I had a Japanese Maple tree planted last year. It's in a pretty shady area where the soil stays moist. The tree was planted when it had zero leaves on it and looked pretty frail. It still looks frail now and has branches that are turning white. I have pruned the branches. There are some brown curled up leaves on the tree. It has never bloomed. Is it dead? How do I know? Should I take off all the curled up leaves in hopes healthy ones will grow? Thanks for your help !

    I don't know myself, but perhaps it would be good to check with a local nursery - I know here, they are very generous with their help. Also, our university has a great horticultural department which helps out locals - don't know where you live, so I don't know what's available for you.

    Have you done a search on Google? I have 2 in our garden here in Wales, UK. They both love moist well fed soil and sunlight. It could be that yours is in too shaded a spot and I would guess that as there are no new leaves then it is dead, but that is just my opinion.

    The landscaper said it would grow nicely in the shade. I'm not sure what happened but I pruned it...got rid of the dead branches and dried up leaves...watered it plenty and was able to get it looking great again !

    Doesn't matter if you can't figure out what you did - YOU SAVED IT that's all that matters.

    I would prune it in the spring. Japanese maples are fragile.
