So, there's tight budgets at a lot of workplaces. Some people are being layed off too, like at the banks this week.
But there are places out there that will give you money. All you have to do is come up with a plan for the money and if they like the plan, they send you the money. Of course you have to write a big honking report too.
Step1. Shwa Girl asks the boss if I can go after more money. Yes.
Step 2. Fill out all the forms. Apply for the money. Late.
Step 3. Say sorry that it's late and ask is there any way I can still be in the running for the money. Get a Yes.
Step 4. Get the money and start the plan.
One of my coworkers went to a course in Niagara Falls with some of the money. The other coworker went to a course in Hamilton with the money. Hotel, travel and meals paid. They come back and share with 10 other coworkers. 12 for the price of 2.
Shwa Girl's turn. I choose a learning thingy in British Columbia. Hotel, travel costs and meals paid. This learning thingy gives you all their stuff after you go. All the PowerPoints. All the notes. All the posters. All the booklets. All the freebies.
So I come back and share with 55 more people at work.
Now we are up to 67 people getting the benefit of just a little bit of money. And the boss did not have to pay anything.
Now all I have to do is write all the reports and sent it in. Just a mini novel's worth of writing on the computer. And make sure the budget balances well and send in all the receipts.
It was a lot of work with the reports and such, but I managed to help 67 people. All from what I learned on Smart Canucks.

Interesting -so this learning place covered your expenses, is that right? So did you yourself cover the cost of your replacement at work while you were gone?

Another benefit -- new work connections/friends. So if you are laid off like the banks workers I mentioned in the OP, there are more people to help you look for a job. Especially if you put them in your LinkedIn network.

Wow, you're good! I remember when you did something similar last year:

Can't wait to see what you manage for next year. Congrats again!

Always great when someone else can pay for your learning!
