Thread: Can Anyone Identify This Tree?
-
Mon, Nov 7th, 2016, 03:39 PM #1
I spotted this tree on the Saint Mary's Universty campus in Halifax, NS in October. I just loved it, but don't know what kind it is. The leaves almost look like small, dense oak leaves. The berries are a vibrant red (not orange-red). For those who might be near the campus, the building to the left in the picture is the student union building, and the sports field is to the right.

Found a site that has a closeup photo of the same berries and leave. Hawthorn berry tree.

Note the caution about correctly identifying the tree leaves.
Think some cosmetic lines have hawthorn berry hand creams and like!
I was going to say that the berries look like rose hips because I have seen a similar tree but also many shrubs with those berries near parking lots. Hey, bonus points if the berries are edible. Don't think I've tried hawthorn berries.Last edited by Ciel; Mon, Nov 7th, 2016 at 09:35 PM.

They have very pretty flowers in the spring. At U of Guelph they were planted all through the parking lots. They also had a lot of quince, which similarly flowers but has a much brighter colour range, and also fruits.
