My deepest sympathies to you and your kids......i just can't imagine what it's is like for you...
"Hugs"
P. S. For the légal stuff...in order...funeral director, notary, accountant + at the caisse pop, there are staff who are dealing only With estates (probably in other Banks as well)....these People cover a big part of the paperwork that have to be done. .Last edited by Mia001; Mon, Jan 2nd, 2017 at 02:08 PM.

Mia, I guess that was my experience when my Mom passed away, a lot of the paperwork was done by our bank (Daughter), but all legal, of course, so I just asked her if one of us passes away, if our joint accounts would be frozen and she said absolutely not, that's a myth....ah, well, maybe it's different bank to bank?
According to this TDCanada site:
What happens to funds in the Joint Account if one of the accountholders dies?
This will depend on the terms that govern the account and the direction provided by the accountholders to us at the time the Joint Account is opened. In some cases, the Joint Account may have a right of survivorship which allows TD Canada Trust to pay the account balance directly to the surviving joint accountholder(s).
Note: In Québec, a joint account is frozen upon the death of one of the joint account holders. Talk to us about how this works.
What is a right of survivorship?
If one accountholder dies and the account has been designated by the accountholders in our records as having a right of survivorship, we are entitled to pay the funds to the surviving accountholder(s).
We are, however, not in a position to determine whether the surviving accountholder(s) may keep the funds as their own or whether they should be distributed in accordance with the deceased's will or provincial laws governing estate matters. In some cases, legal ownership of the funds could be challenged by others who may think they have an interest in the account such as beneficiaries of the deceased's estate. A surviving joint accountholder may have to demonstrate that the deceased accountholder intended the remaining funds be a gift to the joint account holder. This could potentially lead to delays in the surviving accountholder being able to access funds in the account.
So I guess it's all in the way it's set up originally...

I believe it is different province to province re: joint accounts being frozen or not. Please be careful about advice from outside Quebec.
I'm in Quebec but know nothing about this topic, but I found this just now:
https://www.bmo.com/pdf/14-2043_Powe...eOne_E_FNL.PDF
"What happens to this account when an owner dies?
This is determined by the latest signed account
documentation on file. If it was set up with:
• Right of Survivorship (not applicable for residents
of Quebec – please see Note 2):
the funds are accessible to the survivor(s)
• No Right of Survivorship: the funds are now part of
the Estate of the deceased. In Quebec, the share of
the deceased is now part of the Estate.
Note 1) In some cases both the survivor(s) and the
Estate will have the authority to access the funds –
check with your branch to find out more.
Note 2) For residents of Quebec, there is no right of
survivorship. The account will be frozen. The funds in the
joint account belong equally to the estate and the joint
owner(s) of the account, unless the liquidator and the joint
owner(s) agree otherwise in writing. In such a case, the
funds can be released separately to the estate and the
joint owner(s) pursuant to the terms of their agreement."
If you don't know the status of the account, I agree with others about withdrawing funds before alerting the bank etc. Just my opinion.

I do not wish to offend anyone but Quebec does not follow the same laws as the rest of Canada. We are based on Napoleonic law. Please be prudent Darth.
They will freeze the bank accounts. Just withdraw everything.

Agree with Patty, qc laws are differents from other provinces
Try to take some money out before the Banks are advised of your hurband death.....
On the other hand, things are going pretty fast and banking things will probably be solved withing 2-3 weeksThank's to DH who told me the grumpy Garfield was not at all representative of who i am

I am so sorry for your loss.
Here are some things other than the bank account info above. (Do get your hands on as much cash as possible to see you through this tho... been there and you will need it.)
Credit cards often have insurance in case of death... not all but some so check with all credit card companies.
There are VAST differences in funeral services, prices and funeral service companies... call around to find your best prices.
Car loan companies often insist upon insurance to cover the cost of the vehicle in the event of.
Over draft may or may not be covered as other bank loans as well.
Double check all those insurance policies so you get everything that might be coming to you.
You are going to have a big process... so make a list of what you have to do and get people to help you..... freeze any of the extra food people bring by for the days when you just "can't" because the grief will come in waves.
Get people to take the kids sometimes so you have time to grieve.... and so they can talk to someone too. They will know you are upset and may not want to talk to you for fear of upsetting you more. I know you will just want to hold them close but it will be a real gift for all... including those that have lost him too.
Be very kind to yourself and cut yourself some slack... you can pm me anytime.
