I just saw a news article from the budget yesterday that said the government held good on their promise of extending maternity leave to 18 months, with you receiving 33% of your income/month as opposed to 55%. At first I thought, well there's no way we can live on 33% of the income. But I just did math on what I will pay for my two children to go to childcare for 6 months and have me return to work, and I will actually be further ahead if I stay on EI for those 6 months.

That's insane. Child care is obviously going to cost an arm and a leg!! lol I just did the math and when I return to work after I pay child care, I'll only be left with $800 a month, not even enough to cover the mortgage payment. *sigh* I think we have some budgeting to do.

Anyone else considering tkaing the 18 months?

18 months is like some European countries. Doesn't Sweden get 2 years? One parent for the first year and the other parent can take the second year? Or both parents at the same time?

Some employers may not be happy, especially if they have just enough staff and no more money to hire a temporary person for 18 months. Just my thoughts....

its great news for workers whose employers provide a top up to maternity/parental leave to up to 93% of your income.

I doubt most employers will do a top up for 18 months, they will just stretch the same amount over the 18 months but as Wimbly said the day care savings will be incredible especially if you have two little ones.
