My pumkins get pretty aged looking (once cut) fairly quickly. Softer looking, wilted-like and the cut areas start to curl and shrivel, sort of. Exposure to air and all that. Cut my pumpkins the day before and do not light them until Halloween. Never tried anything else except carving them the day of Trick or Treating for putting out that night. Pumpkins can catch fire, especially if using candles to light and especially as the flame dries some of the pumpkin out.
I monitor lit pumpkins closely and keep a spray bottle handy, just in case, I think good to spritz and keep moist inside? Lids are famous for burning. Sometimes, if blackness is getting to be a problem on lid, I just take it right off. Maybe I am paranoid, but I keep curtains away from pumpkins if placing in front window. Often just set them on my front steps mostly. I'm not sure but might not be good plan to light up pumpkin too many days in a row? Maybe if using small flashlight or something that would be okay but I usually use candles.
Sometimes I keep mine refrigerated once cut and just set out inside front window for hours of trick or treat. Then I chop them up in large, wide slices and bake them (skin n all) until the "meat" is tender, scrape and mash, pre measure into 1 or 2 cup amounts in freezer bags or containers and then there is loads of fresh pumpkin to season any way I like for pies, muffins or whatever?! Wouldn't bother trying to cook a pumpkin that been sitting out for a day or two, but three or four hours shouldn't hurt, should it? I fine for having done this many times but occasionally do buy pumpkins for both carving and seperate ones for cooking purposes alone.
You could do an experiment if you are planning to do several pumpkins and just carve one a day and keep track of results? I would be interested to hear about it. Probably website somewhere with some official pumpkin carving facts though?
Have a Safe and Happy Halloween Everybody!
