I asked DH this exact question about the price. ( why was it so cheap lately ) We had sworn off bacon for 2 reasons for many years, the prices were getting crazy and most of it is fat and very bad for us. ( ugh but so delicious! )
Anyway, DH mentioned that because of some virus recently that many pigs had to be slaughtered ASAP. I asked him how can they sell that meat then? So not sure if the surplus of bacon made the price drop or what.

ok I was just reading this and was talking to my son about how ridiculous the price of bacon is and how much he loves it. and he says to me that there is a bacon shortage expected and I said not possible and he told me to look it up and apparently there is a shortage. if you can believe that well I'm not sure but that might have something to do with it as funny as that sounds to me.

I buy my bacon at SDM on 20x day. It's usually 2.99 or 3.49 on sale for Schneider's or Hygrade. No one is buying so I get first dibs on the meatiest ones with the least amount of fat and I can take my time. Then off to another SDM and do it again. Ever buy 20 packs of bacon at a time, LOL?
I make subs with 2 packs of bacon, saute mushrooms and onion on toasted buns with melted mozza cheese. I make enough for supper and lunch for family the next day.Last edited by couponmummy; Wed, Feb 12th, 2014 at 06:25 AM.

Haven't had trouble around here - still very good packages for $3 for 500g, maybe once a month they go on two for $5.
Don't buy it often, though - cuz I know I shouldn't! argh...

If there is less pork available to sell to market, it becomes a commodity with higher cost. Farmers have to recoup their losses with remaining pork that did not get sick. Grain used for feed is another cost that could add to final price of bacon.
Farm income/loss cannot be offset by income from other sources-they are reported on separate lines on tax return. How many farmers want to be losing money when they lose livestock due to illness? Nobody.2021-Bring on the sunshine, sweets & online shopping.

mmmmmm bacon! I don't buy that crap called bacon that is sold in stores. It is pumped so full of water that you actually get very little meat. You best bet is to source it out from a local farmer. THAT is real bacon!

The price has been pretty stable week by week with at least some store having it on sale. (maybe not $2.00)
Starting my second month of Keto, me and my fiance both go through about 4 packs of bacon a week if not more. I'm sure hoping it will be on sale or the price will be lower.

Real bacon or pork or beef or chicken or fish is good.
The processed crap Maple Leafs etc sells under the name of bacon , sausages , salami , cold cuts , ham etc is a joke.
Once you read the ingredients on the back of the package ..real meat is the last thing on it .. a zillion chemicals , preservatives , additives , fillers , colours are listed on it
These days I just buy fresh chicken or pork and make my own cuts , slices , strips etc with them .
Cook it and keep it in the fridge. Then I use it for sandwiches, fried rice etc as needed..much healthier & cheaper in the long run

My husband has started curing and smoking pork belly for bacon. It is beyond delicious. I hate store bough bacon now, not even close to as good as homemade.

I agree, bacon costs a lot right now. We don't eat nearly as much as we used to.
It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.
