    Where were you in 1972?

Ron Ellis, Paul Henderson, Vic Hadfield & Don Awrey,
Were once on a team who still tell a story,
Pete Mahovolich, Marcel Dionne & Gilbert Pereault,
Were also there…don’t you just know,
    Naughty Wayne Cashman & Bobby-Clobber-Clarke,
All can tell you it wasn’t just a walk in the park,
Phil-Smilin’-Esposito, Brad Park & Dennis Hull,
Will tell you all, there was not a moment that twas dull,
Ken Dryden, Stan Mikita & Guy LaPointe,
Sticks on the ice, they did not disappoint,
Yvan Cournoyer, Mickey Redmond & Serge Savard,
Were part of the reasons we Canucks Stand On Guard,
Rod Gilbert, Pat Stapleton & Brian Glennie,
To pay that kind of talent today would cost a pretty penny,
Bill White, Jean-Paul Parise & ode to Bobby Orr,
That Parry Sound defenseman sure knew how to score,
I still remember the headlines & the pride of elation,
Back when Canada stuck together & was more of a nation,
Maybe these moments became feelings to us,
& that’s why hockey is a game that we all love to fuss,
We used to watch hockey with Dad on our lone TV,
& adjust the bunny ears, then curse the referee,
No sports bars, no flat screens, just great play by play,
Yes, hockey also meant family back way back in the day,
Even the beer commercials you’d never PVR,
& those memorable ads for a sporty new car,
As all of you have figured I’m a sentimental sap,
& that’s all for now, this rhyme is a rap.

I was in a bar in Hamilton with 5 of my co-workers from the accounting firm that I worked at.

It was a terrific afternoon of elation when the Canadians won that final game over the Russians!

What a huge rush of emotion when Henderson scored that game winning goal !!!

He scored all three game winning goals in Russia and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame for this accomplishment!!!

I agree with you guys that the Canada/Russia hockey series was great hockey. I was a kid then and I remember the principal gathering all of us students in the gym and wheeling in a tv so we could watch some of the games live. What a great way to bring in Canadian pride for an immigrant kid 7 years of age! Less than 5 years after arriving in Canada!
Anyways, my 2 cents on Paul Henderson is very simple. What did he do in hockey prior to this series and what did he do after this series. And for that reason I would say he does not belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Now that said he was elected into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2013, which is part of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, but it makes far more sense for him to be in that then in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was never a superstar player with the Leafs and Red Wings and his best season with the Leafs came the year of the Series, where he had 60 points. He averaged just over 40 points a season in 12 seasons. In an era where the best players were averaging over 90 points a season and many made the Hall of Fame for that.
Henderson making the International Ice Hockey Federation makes far more sense as he was a superstar in the Series and he did have 3 game winning goals!
That is my 2 cents, and in no way am I refuting your opinion, I am just giving you mine.
    Have a great one all!

Off to the Habs vs Leaf game shortly. Looks like only one to score wins tonight! Could be Clash of the Titlest! Both teams look like they will be golfing soon!

You make an excellent argument Habs, that cannot be disputed by the facts of a career in the NHL.
I commend you on your diligence and research.
I still feel that there should be a special award in the HOF for those that have gone above and beyond normal expectations in extreme circumstances.
Just my thoughts, as were yours.

It was great that Canada won, and it was great to prevail over communist Soviets. But I think it's odd that Canadians remember the '72 Summit Series as a wonderful event when it was marred by one of the dirtiest plays in hockey history. Hardly anyone in Canada remembers that in game 6 of the 8-game series, Bobby Clarke took a vicious two-handed slash to the ankle of Soviet star winger Valeri Kharlamov, breaking the ankle and rendering Kharlamov ineffective through game 8. Canada was coming off a devastating 5-4 loss in game 5, in which the Canadians blew a 4-1 third period lead. Kharlamov was easily Russia's top player. Eliminating him would be the equivalent of taking away a Gretzky or Lemieux.

The Soviets could clinch the Series with a win in game 6, 7 or 8 but with Kharlamov's absence they lost the final three games, each by one goal. Canada claimed victory in the Summit Series with four wins, three losses and one tie.

Kharlamov had a decent 3 goals and 4 assists in seven games played. But after Clarke's second-period slash Kharlamov missed the rest of game 6, and all of game 7. He played in game 8, but was a participant in name only, as Paul Henderson and Canada stole the headlines with a late-game goal in Canada's 6-5 clinching victory.

I think the '72 Summit Series is forever stained by this horrific, dirty attack on a classy, skilled player. To claim victory and to fondly remember that hockey series as a cherished event is sickening to me. It goes against most of what Canadians and Canada stand for.

As for me, I'll take my high-def big screen TV over the fuzzy picture and rabbit ears of the 1970s. The hockey is much better today with the thuggery of the 70's and 80's behind us.
As for legendary hockey victories over the Soviets, the nod easily goes to the 1980 Winter Olympic Men's team that defeated a much-superior Soviet team. That group of collegiate nobodys beat the Soviets fair and square without resorting to cheapshot tactics.

    Here's a link to Clarke's slash. Just remember Kharlamov did NOTHING dirty to anybody;
