Our little guy is 9 months and until now the few times we have gone out our parents have watched him....but we are thinking of taking the big step and going out for dinner!!!!...and asking a friends daughter to watch our little guy for a few hours.....16 years old.

What is the going rate for babysitting? It's been a long time for me, and I think I was paid about $3.00 an hour (quite a few years back!!) What is the hourly rate now?

    Thanks so much!

I think it depends where you live, I have a friend who lives outwest and she gets anywhere from 14$-18$ an hour, but around here you would NEVER get that!! Depending on how long it might be 25-30 a day.

I never got less then $20, even for only 2hrs. I wouls ask the girl how much she thinks she should be paid. That way she wont expect more and you know what she expects.

My teenagers babysit and they get $10.00/hr and are happy with that. They know the individuals they are babysitting for. My girls are 14 and 19.

I would also ask her what she wants.
Explain how long you think you will be, and ask what she thinks is fair.

My babysitter has different rates depending on whether the kids are awake or not. She charges like $15 if it's during the day and she has to take them to the park and such. Much less if they are in bed when she gets there (like $8 I think). And somewhere in the middle if she has to put them to bed. But that is also for 2 kids. I'd just ask. Saves a lot of confusion. I also round up to the nearest $10.

I used to get $20-40 a night for babysitting when I was a teenager (7ish years ago), depending on the people. I babysat last summer and charged $40 a day, including meals.
Ask the girl...$10/hour is pretty fair (take into consideration minimum wage).

I'd say $5-8 an hour for one child, with a minimum of say $20.

It's interesting to see the variety.
Gee, when I started babysitting, it was a baby, and I got 35 cents an hour, lol. Same rate for no matter how many, too.

I wish it was still 35 cents - we'd go out a lot more often!!!

She was fine with $ 8 and hour -- our little guy was only up for about an hour, then she got to watch tv for a few hours.

That sounds about right for a casual babysitter. I think some of the higher rates people were quoting were more for professional nannies. A teenager would not have the same qualifications.

I live on Vancouver Island in BC, and the rate around our area is 5-7$ an hour.I have three teenage girls who babysit and they get that, all different people...also, considering the minimum wage in BC is $6 something for any teenager with 500 hours or less of employment, my kids don't complain.

Also, when the kiddies go to bed, the babysitters can watch tv, movies, go on the net, talk on the phone, etc...but when they are up (the children) it's all about them...I also leave snacks out for the babysitter when I have to get one for my 9 year old son.
