When we were looking for a place to move, it surprized us so much that the pet thing would be so difficult - frankly we got 95% prepared that we would have to give up our cats (and I did a lot of crying about it) - the rental market is really tight in our city and the vast majority of them didn't take pets. Some would take small dogs with a pet deposit.
This included all types of rentals, though apartments especially. However, we were looking also at basement suites, duplexes, houses - whatever fit our budget.
We looked really hard, considering all types of places, not just ones which totally suited us - and actually got into a bit of a crunch about moving, since we hadn't found something til that mid-month.
It's because of stooopid people who rent and have cats or other animals and they aren't trained properly or the people just don't keep things clean enough.
When we have visitors, people don't know we have cats til they see them!

Unless your pet terrorizes neighbors, it is law in Ontario that landlords cannot say no pets (diff if you live in a shared house because of allergies but for apartments etc) yet shelters still get that excuse

Thank you :cat: for understanding.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I've lost two. The only thing that would fill the gap was to get another cat.
