I had the same thing happen before at SDM. It is an individual store's policy. I was told that they were having a lot of fraud. People buying lots of gift cards with stolen credit cards.

You need to call headoffice regarding this.
Yes, I have heard of it before from other stores.
BUT....shoppers is having a promotion that if you buy SMD gift cards you get bonus points, ONLY IF PAYING WITH SHOPPERS MC.
So how can you participate in this promotion is your local store is denying you?

My card is brand new and it's the Shoppers optimum Mc, i was only trying to get more points by using the Mc.
The cashier could have easily asked for my id to clarify if it was stolen or notLast edited by osrs; Mon, Dec 7th, 2009 at 11:56 PM.

It makes sense, a policy is a policy. How mad some people get when people do not know the stores coupon policy, or policy on a certain deal, you must be willing to bend the other way when someone knows of a policy that can be frustrating to the consumer but protects the retailer.

FYI sniperc151 I was not mad at all I ended up paying cash. I always respect stores policies and i was more curious than mad since the cashier did not explain any thing other than it was a policy.

Very good point. One could also say that you wanted to buy some gift cards for Christmas gifts. It's absurd to say you can't do your Christmas shopping with your credit card. As osrs said, the cashier could have easily asked for ID to be assured the MC was not stolen.
Well, I guess they can choose to exclude certain customers. If it's possible, just go buy the SDM gift cards at another SDM.

I charged ten $10 SDM GCs on the weekend using my Optimum MC. I charged 3 of them on Friday with no problems. On Saturday I went back for 7 more because I decided to do the $75/15,000 pts promo. I was told that I could not charge more than $50 of GCs. They suggested I should pay the rest in cash. I pointed out the Optimum MC 500 pts promo. I asked if I could do it in 2 transactions and after some hesitation was told ok. But then the head cashier decided they would let me do it on one transaction because she recognized me as a regular customer. The reason she gave for the $50 limit is concerns over credit card fraud. It is a store policy, which is why she was able to over-ride it in my case.
Oh, almost forgot – I had called SDM that Friday to ask about limits on how many GCs I could buy to take advantage of the Optimum MC promo. She said to watch out – if I buy too many it would be considered ‘commercial.’ I said I would be buying 10 x $10 max for the 15,000 pts promo. She said that was ok. Wish I had thought to push her more on the ‘commercial’ comment she made.

I buy gift cards with my Visa there all the time, buying a $200 GC once a month. But as others have said, policies vary from store to store.
The SDM on Spring Garden will not let me pay for lottery with my Visa unless I'm also buying other stuff. It's not just the cashier making it up either, if they try to put it through it will freeze up the register and give them a number to call to get it unlocked. However, I buy lottery at an SDM close to my home on a fairly regular basis, pay with Visa and no problem at all.
