Wintry mix of weather on Wednesday night and Thursday.

A low pressure system is forecast to develop along the American Seaboard and is forecast to intensify as it tracks east of the Avalon on Wednesday night. The low will then continue out to sea on Thursday.

At this time, current guidance indicates that over southern regions as well as the Avalon Peninsula, this system will bring rain, heavy at times, and strong northerly winds on Wednesday night. For central regions as well as the Northeast and East Coasts, there is the potential for significant snowfall accompanied by strong northerly winds. This is expected to occur overnight Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Conditions are expected to improve throughout the day on Thursday.

There is uncertainty with respect to the depth and track of this system and the public is advised to monitor future forecasts as watches and warnings may be required.

Snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 30 cm is expected.

Rain is forecast to change to snow this evening and will become heavy at times during the night. The snow will taper to flurries Thursday morning and end by afternoon.

Typically with late season snowfalls, accumulations are highly variable from one area to another depending on elevation and proximity to the coast. As a result, there is potential for amounts to exceed 30 cm over some higher elevations while lower elevations and areas right along the coast could see lower amounts than forecast.
