An earthquake in the 5.0 - 5.9 magnitude can cause major damage to poorly constructed buildings over small regions. At most slight damage to well-designed buildings.

On a serious note, this is why Haiti got creamed by a relatively small quake.

Damage in port perry, Well not really we felt it and some things almost fell off the shelves and it scared the daughter but other than that thought someone was at the door cause it moved back and forth like someone was knocking on it.

I haven't gone upstairs yet but during the quake it sounded like someone was walking around up there and I was alone. And the window beside me was really creaking like we were getting a strong wind.

The Hatian quake was considerably stronger, it was a 7.0.

Since it was 5.5 at the epicenter of this one, 61km north of Ottawa, our shake in the GTA was probably only a three or four at the most. If I remember correctly the Richter Scale is logarhythmic. So 5 is 10X stronger than four, 6 is 100x stronger and 7 would be 1000X stronger. No comparison. Also the building materials used in North America are far superior quality and therefore there would be less damage here even in a same size quake.
