WOODVILLE, Ont. — Witnesses say they thought the four-year-old girl found in a ditch was the victim of a hit and run.
But police said Tuesday the girl, who was taken to hospital with serious injuries, had been assaulted in a nearby arena Monday night.
Emergency crews were called to the Woodville/Eldon Community Centre, located 115 km northeast of Toronto, after it was reported that a child had been taken from a washroom and assaulted by an unknown man.
The young girl, who was found semi-conscious in a ditch in a field adjacent to the arena, was first taken to Lindsay's Ross Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.
City of Kawartha Lakes OPP media relations officer Const. Mark Boileau said it's not known if the girl was sexually assaulted.
The girl went into the washroom about 6:30 p.m. A family member attempted to go into the washroom several minutes later only to find the door locked, police said.
After the family member alerted an arena employee, the door was unlocked, but the child was no longer in the washroom, police said.
The little girl was found moments later outside. Investigators believe the suspect removed her through a side washroom exit.
Police continue to investigate and are reminding the public to be aware of their personal safety and that of their children at all times.
"You can never be too cautious with kids in a public setting," Boileau said.

Lots more winning Leaf games to go to this season...happy to be home with Aussie girl...I am a softie yeah yeah I know...just couldn't bear to have her crated and alone after just arriving to her new digs.......will have to ger her a jersey though
