To truckerofbc, I have a question. Coming into a village on the U.S. National Road, U.S. Route 40 was a sign at the village limits "NO ENGINE BRAKES." What is that, and why would it be prohibited going through a village on a 2-lane highway? Just curious.

Actually, the wording can appear in a number of different wordings all of which mean the same thing. They could say no Engine Brakes, No Jake Brakes, No Engine r.e.tarders (hmmm wouldnt let me write the word without dots) or No Engine Compression in some cases they won't say the name, they will say Trucker's $$$ fine for excessive noise.
A Jake Brake is the usual term although it is formally known as Jacob's Brake for the company that produced it.
These are the things on trucks that slow a truck down and they can be noisy or silent depending on the make or model of the truck. Typically when you hear a truck going down the road and it is slowing down you hear the bah bah bah bah sound which is the Jake Brake reducing engine compression which helps and assists in slowing it down without the use of physically touching your actual Brakes which are on the wheels.
and my new blog post is out today a little late. Just came back from the Island.
