I downloaded the app just for this and it clearly states no purchase necessary, however, i cannot play it says you need to purchase in order to play. Maybe it me doing something wrong.

You do not do it through the app. You go to the summer game website starbuckssummergame.ca and scroll right to the bottom of the page and there you will see a link to enter without a purchase. However you need to have a starbucks account to associate any wins with. It is not a standalone contest. None of my purchases have ever shown up in the game and I have just entered two free times every day during the contest. Have won more than I normally do and I am lucky I guess
