Petsmarts in Ontario do not sell cats or dogs, but house adoption centres for local shelters, but many of the smaller petstores do sell puppymill dogs / kittymill kittens (and most of the kittens are way too young too).
PeTA don't even think you should have an animal as a pet so they will have an issue with anyone who sells / adopts them, and as mentioned above they are different in the US and PeTA concentrates more there
My local petsmart has fairly knowledgeable staff and I know they do get some training on the foods, albeit from the reps for each food so its a bit biased - I have been known to annoy the reps in petsmart with questions and demand not to get a canned response

I was so happy when they started doing it. It's a great way to open peoples eyes to all the pets that need homes. Some people think all pets have to come from a pet store, so seeing these shelter animals in a pet store makes it more acceptable for some people to adopt a shelter pet.
I agree it's A+ in customer service!!!
