Cheap Household Cleaning

I followed a friend's advice today and tried using salt and a damp cloth to clean the bathroom sink and tub. It works well, is more environmentally friendly, and doesn't have the heavy smell that Comet does.

I've been using white vinegar and newspaper for years to clean glass with good results. I just buy a huge bottle of vinegar on sale and it lasts for ages.

Another habit I find useful is to use a tissue to clean the steamy bathroom mirror right after stepping out of the shower. Does a great job and you don't use any windex.

If anyone else has some tips they'd like to share on this subject. I'd love to hear from them.

I bet our grandmothers (or great grandmothers) would roll their eyes at what we use and think we need to get the job done. Here's a recipe I've tried and liked:

Fabric Softener

-one part vinegar
-one part baking soda
-two parts water

Use 1/4 cup per load. I also put in a couple drops of tea tree oil just to give it a slight scent.

I marvel at the show "How Clean is your House." They seem to use natural products for everything...baking soda, salt, lemons, elbow grease. LOL Cleaning doesn't have to be expensive, we sure pay for "convenience."

I feel the same way! My house will someday be spotlessly clean and empty!

i love that show too but i do find that sometimes they talk about products that i haven't heard of before or that are not sold in canada

I forgot to mention another cheapie cleaning habit of mine. I put about a half cup of white vinegar into about a gallon of hot water and use the solution to mop the floor.

I must admit, I do love the smell of Pinesol, but the vinegar solution does a good job for less bucks.

how to get crayon off your doors

heat the crayon with a blowdryer then wipe it off with baby oil

marker on a mirror use toothpaste not the gel let it sit for awhile then wipe it off

dirty microwave cut up a lemon place it in a bowl of water turn the microwave on for about 5-10 minutes then wipe clean

Damp microfibre cloths work well by themselves for most cleaning purposes.

Speaking of "How Clean is Your House" I just remembered a great tip I learned from that show. If you've got a pot with burned stuff in it, mix up a paste of dish soap and baking powder. Spread it on and let it sit for about an hour, then scrub. Believe me, it's so much easier than soap pads. I saw them use it on a blackened oven door window and it did wonders.

vinegar is also a non-toxic way to kill weeds. spray it directly onto a weed, even dandelions. spray it into the base of the stem, into the root area.

don't spray your whole lawn, it'll kill it ;p

i have also seen solutions of vinegar mixed with salt.
